Hideaway is an oasis of lush tropical greenery in the heart of Arugam Bay, a short stroll to the gorgeous east-coast beaches. Arugam Bay is known as one of the 10 best surf spots in the world and dedicated surfers return each year to experience the thrilling waves and the relatively secluded beaches. Keen surfers usually make the eight hour long journey on the A4 route directly from Colombo to Arugam Bay, which is tiring but well-worth the trip. Since Arugam Bay is easily assessable from other parts of the country including the southern highlands (Badulla, Ella, Haputale), central hills (Kandy), Buttala foothills (Uda Walawe, Yala, Tissa) and the South Coast, it can be easily be included in a tour of Sri Lanka.
Introduction
A homely guest house with comfortable cottages and a/c rooms, Hideaway is situated on a six-acre estate amidst swaying palms, flowering shrubs and fruit trees and attracts numerous varieties of birds and the occasional monkey and mongoose. Originally a holiday home of its Sri Lankan owners Vernon & Marlene, it weas expanded to include guest rooms from the late 1970s and from these humble beginnings eventually became a guest house with the feel of `home away from home.’ Although much hardship was endured following the devastating tsunami in 2004, the cottages and rooms have been rebuilt and today offer some of the best a/c rooms in Arugam Bay. Although Hideaway doesn’t have direct access to the beaches, a five minute stroll takes you to one of the main surf points on the bay.

Accommodation
There are several room categories at Hideaway including five Double Rooms (in the main building); five individual cottages (of which two are spacious oamily cottages); and twp2 a/c villa rooms in a newly-built two-storey villa towards the front of the property. All rooms and cottages open out to the landscaped gardens. The upstairs a/c room has beautiful, distant views of the Indian Ocean. All rooms and cottages have private verandas and attached bathrooms with showers (no h/w). Red Dot recommends the spacious villa rooms with king sized bed, planters’ chairs and terrace that skirts around, ideal for taking in the breathtaking sunrise and life as it unfolds in this small fishing village.
Facilities
The open-sided restaurant, lounge area and office is located on the ground floor of the main building. Personally trained by Marlene, the chef here turns out delicious Sri Lankan, Chinese and western dishes. Seafood is a specialty here and fresh prawns, crab, and lobster is prepared to your liking. The lounge area has a TV and plenty of books and magazines to read. Vernon, a wildlife enthusiasts and nature photographer, has created a nature corner where guests can learn of Sri Lanka’s exotic fauna and flora.
Excursions
Listed as one of ten top surf spots in the world, Arugam Bay also known as AbaY, is a popular haunt for surfers especially during the peak season between July and August. There are several popular point breaks including Ullah Point, Pottuvil Point, Surf Point, Peanut Farm Point, and Crocodile Rock. `Surf Point’ that breaks at the headland in front of Arugam Bay is suitable for body surfing and beginners; Pottuvil Point situated on a deserted beach north of Arugam Bay is more suitable for experienced surfers; and Crocodile Rock, another challenging surf point, is located south of Arugam Bay. Waves of up to 5–6ft offer up to a 400 metre `ride’ and the relatively isolated beaches are a major attraction to surfers. Explore the nearby Pottuvil lagoon, home to monitor lizards, monkeys, and numerous species of birds. Trek through wilderness to the ruins of the Kudumbigala jungle monastery which dates back to the 2nd century BC with rock caves, inscriptions, and ruins of stone buildings. The spectacular views from the rock extend as far as Kataragama.
