Kassapa Lions Rock named after the legend that surrounds the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress, is a peaceful holiday retreat with 31 individual chalets scattered over acres of landscaped gardens in the heart of the Cultural Triangle. Situated in the rural village of Didgampathaha, which is located between Dambulla and Habarana, Kassapa Lions Rock is ideally placed to explore the Cultural Triangle sites of Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and the Minneriya National Park. For those travelling to the East Coast towns of Trincomalee and Batticaloa on the A6 route, this is an ideal stop for lunch or an overnight stay. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take up to four hours and Kandy is about three hours away.
Introduction
Kassapa Lions Rock offers well-appointed accommodation and facilities within a rural village setting surrounded by tropical trees and birdcall. Ancient history and nature is all around and guests can choose to go on jungle treks with the in-house naturalist, visit ruins of ancient kingdoms, or just relax by the pool and take in the magnificent views. This is the only hotel in the Cultural Triangle with views of both the gigantic Sigirya Rock and the Pidurangala rock situated side by side. Both are linked to the legend of King Kassapa and are intertwined in history that dates back to the 5th century AD.

Accommodation
There are 31 well-designed individual chalets, each with a spacious a/c bedroom, private veranda, and ensuite bathroom with bath tub and open air h/w shower. In-room facilities include satellite TV, telephone, and mini-bar. On request chalets are provided with a CD/DVD player, hair dryer, iron and ironing board. There is also room service and laundry service.
Facilities
A range of cuisine including Sri Lankan, Indian, Chinese, and Western dishes are served here prepared with fresh vegetables and herbs purchased from the nearby village home gardens. The swimming pool is located close to the restaurant and has spectacular views of Pidurangala and Sigiriya rock. Other facilities include a fully equipped conference hall and internet facility in the main office area. Bicycles are available for those wanting to explore the surrounding rural villages. Guided treks pass paddy fields, village temples, and lotus filled water tanks, and bird trails are also on offer.
Excursions
Visit the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Sigiriya. The Minneriya National Park, which is a mix of dry evergreen forest, scrub jungle and grassy plains and is dominated by the Minneriya Tank, is also located near by. Large groups of elephants, sambar deer and toque monkeys are regularly seen here, as well as plenty of bird life. In August and September each year during the dry season, wild elephants from the surrounding wilderness in search of food and water, makes their way to the shores of the Minneriya Lake situated inside the Minneriya National Park. Huge heard of elephants, sometimes numbering upto 300, converge together within a few square kilometers of the lake – a thrilling sight not to be missed.
