The Courtyard, Galle Fort

The Courtyard is a uniquely designed five-bedroom Galle Fort Villa which has been refurbished maintaining its original 18C Dutch period architecture. It is centrally located on Lighthouse Street, close to the small art galleries, shops, cafes, restaurants, old buildings and churches of Galle Fort. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take approximately four-and-a-half hours or take the air taxi and fly to Koggala, leaving a 15-minute drive.
Introduction
Dating back 300 years, The Courtyard occupies one of the oldest Dutch villas within Galle Fort. The present Spanish owners have taken care in maintaining the original architectural details of columns and arches, as well as the 18-inch thick walls. The ground floor consists of the living and dining areas, one single room and a bright and airy courtyard at the back with cascading, tropical greenery. The upper floor houses two loft bedrooms and an overhead bridge that links upto two additional double bedrooms overlooking the rear courtyard and gardens. The interiors are stylishly designed with bright colours, blend of contemporary furniture and original Chinese antiques, and object d’art. The Courtyard can be booked by the room or the entire villa and can accommodate up to nine guests. Due to the heights and many stairs to climb, The Courtyard is not recommended for children below 10 years or adults with mobility difficulties.

Accommodation
Four double bedrooms are located on the upper floor and looks down into the courtyard greenery. Two of these are designed loft style with the bed on an elevated timber deck within the room and reached via a narrow staircase and the ensuite bathroom below. There is also a ground floor room with a smaller four poster bed which can sleep one adult or an adult plus a child. Each room is individually designed and is furnished with four poster beds and colourful soft furnishings. The ensuite bathrooms are unique in design and are very much a part of the room design with bathtubs (which vary in design from room to room), located within the bedroom and the w/c separated with a doorway or silk drape. All bedrooms are airconditioned and have an electronic safe.
Facilities
Meals are served at the dining room or by the courtyard garden. Guests can choose from the in-house menu of Sri Lankan and western dishes. There is no swimming pool here, but some of Sri Lanka’s best beaches including Unawatuna Bay, is only a short trishaw ride away. Also located nearby is the Lighthouse Hotel with an extensive swimming pool and spa that guests can use. The Courtyard has its own vintage Morris Minor car that guests are welcome to use when sight seeing around Galle Fort.
Excursions
Lying within the walls of the 17th century Galle’s Dutch Fort, The Courtyard is an ideal base from which to explore the heritage of this old town. Hours can be spent exploring the maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings, the sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, and a growing collection of art galleries, antique shops and restaurants. There are some fine beaches just outside the Fort, including Unawatuna, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa.
