Robin Hill is a four-bedroomed century walauwa (manor house) offering a peaceful holiday in the deep south of Sri Lanka. Situated inland, close to the coastal town of Weligama, this guest house is conveniently located for the southern beaches. The historic city of Galle is about 45 minutes away and the journey from Colombo’s international airport will take around five hours.
Introduction
This late 19C manor house has been carefully refurbished, retaining original architectural features including verandahs that skirt around, central courtyard, old wooden staircases, carved doors and windows, and clay-tiled roof. Interiors are furnished with Dutch-period antiques, old brass lamps, and local artifacts. Robin Hill consists of three bedrooms and a spacious annex with a separate bedroom and can be booked in its entirety or per room, normally on a full-board basis. The Sri Lankan owner has a plantation in the hill country and fresh cut flowers and organic vegetables are brought to Robin Hill regularly from his estate.

Accommodation
The main house consists of three double rooms all opening out to the central courtyard. Rooms are furnished with four-poster antique double or single beds, work desk, and wardrobe. The attached bathrooms have h/w showers. The two-storey annex which also opens out to the central courtyard, has a spacious bedroom which spans the entire upper floor and can sleep up to three people.
Facilities
The main house has living and dining areas opening out to a shady courtyard. This is the outstanding feature, with its lush green tropical foliage including temple trees. Guests can eat in the dining room or in the verandah. The annex has separate living and dining room, and bedroom which open out to an extensive wooden balcony that skirts around and overlooks the courtyard. Traditional Sri Lankan rice and curries are served here cooked over a firewood stove and prepared with fresh organically grown vegetables brought from the owner’s plantation in Haputale. The cook is always willing to share her traditional recipes with guests.
Excursions
Take a short 10 minute tuk-tuk ride to the beautiful beaches of Weligama which is perfect for swimming and snorkelling during the peak season from December to April. Mirissa Watersports conducts numerous watersports including water skiing, jet skiing, wind surfing, canoeing, snorkelling, sailing, deep-sea fishing, sports fishing, and river cruises. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is also considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and Spinner Dolphins. Mirissa Water Sports, as well as the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation based in Mirissa Harbour, offers whale and dolphin-watching excursions during the season. Explore the southern wildlife parks including Yala and Bundala. We recommend a visit to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow streets lined with Dutch and British colonial era buildings, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the lighthouse and a growing collection of art galleries, antique shops, restaurants and cafes.
