Weir House, Ulapane
Price Guide: £
Location
Weir House is a luxurious four-bedroom villa situated amidst tranquil gardens and by a gurgling stream at the base of Ulapane Mountain. Located in the central highlands between Gampola and Nawalapitiya, Weir House is 45 minutes from Kandy, enroute to Kitulgala and the hill stations of Nuwara Eliya and Dickoya. The journey from Colombo’s international airport via Kitulgala will take up to 4 hours.
Introduction
The Weir House, named after the weir that is located upstream, is the country home of a Sri Lankan family who has recently opened their home to guests wishing to spend a peaceful holiday within a village setting. Surrounded by mountains and lush foliage, this is a blissfully peaceful spot, interrupted only by the sound of flowing water, crickets and birdsong. The house is on a six-acre estate scattered with tall tropical trees, fruit, vegetables, herbs, tea, coffee and plenty of flowering plants including beautiful orange, pink and red Heliconeas. The house itself is on an incline and has magnificent mountain views. Interiors are a mix of contemporary minimalist design stylishly infused with Sri Lankan and Indian touches. The Weir House can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests and is rented to one party at a time ensuring privacy. It should be noted that Weir House is located on a hill and requires climbing several steps, making disabled access difficult. It is also not suitable for children below 8 years due to the surrounding slopes down hill.

The lounge area, surrounded by glass windows and furnished with sofas, is ideal for relaxing with a good book. There is also a large flat-screen TV, DVD, DVD library, music system, iPod, a library and board games. Meals are served in the dining room overlooking the mountain, in the gardens, by the poolside, or on the verandah. Sri Lankan and western dishes are served here prepared with freshly-picked vegetables from their own gardens or purchased from the nearby village. If preferred, guests are welcome to cook their own meals in the well-equipped kitchen. The swimming pool stands in beautiful landscaped gardens with the Ulapane mountain looming over. Weir House follows eco-friendly practices and uses water from natural mountain springs, solar energy for heating the water in the bathrooms, recycles waste material, and uses organic farming practices.
Excursions
Birding is utterly rewarding here with numerous species of hill country birds that can be spotted early morning or at dusk. There are several treks just around Weir House including walks up to the Ulapane mountain, down to the weir and the stream (Raja Ella which is a tributary of the Mahaweli River) where you can have a dip in the cool river water, or to the nearby rural village. Venture further off and take in the magnificent views over the Kotmale hydro-power damn, the surrounding paddy fields, tea estates and mountain peaks. Spend a day out in Kandy and visit the historic Temple of the Tooth, Royal Botanical gardens and experience the ancient Kandyan heritage. The adventurous might like to do some white water rafting in Kitulgala which is popular for its thrilling grade 3 to 4 rapids along the Kelani River.
