Governor’s Chalets, located at the edge of Lake Gregory in the outskirts of Nuwara Eliya, consist of three wooden chalets about 10 minutes from Nuwara Eliya town. Blessed by a peaceful aspect, they are still convenient for the golf course or the colonial heritage of Nuwara Eliya. Situated more than 2,000 metres above sea level, Nuwara Eliya is about three hours from Kandy.
Introduction
Opened in mid-2009, the land on which the Governor’s Chalets now stand was previously Lake Gregory’s old boat house premises. Taken over and completely refurbished by the owners of Unawatuna Beach Resort on the south coast, this is fast becoming a popular holiday getaway. The three wooden chalets are solidly built with gabled roofs and wooden floors. The rooms are comfortably furnished and equipped with all modern conveniences. Each separate unit can accommodate upto four guests and is ideal for a family.

Accommodation
There are three individual wooden chalets, each consisting of two separate units that can accommodate up to four guests per unit. Each of the units has a ground floor bedroom furnished with a king size bed, lounge chairs and work desk, and a mezzanine floor with a second sleeping area furnished with a queen size bed. In-room facilities include a flat screen TV with satellite channels, internet facility, mini-bar, electronic safe, and room service. Each chalet opens out to a private verandah with beautiful lake views. The ensuite bathrooms have h/w rain showers and bathtub.
Facilities
The restaurant, with a fireplace, serves an extensive array of Sri Lankan and international cuisine. Food is prepared with fresh up-country vegetables and meats purchased from Nuwara Eliya. The Governor’s Chalets restaurant is a popular lunch stop for many travellers. There is also an outdoor BBQ area equipped with outdoor heaters. Guests can choose to eat in the restaurant or in the privacy of their own chalet.
Excursions
Stroll down to the lake and explore the surroundings. Go boating or even fishing. Children will enjoy going on a pony ride along the lake. Venture off to Nuwara Eliya and take a walk along the leafy byroads lined with tall pine trees and heritage mansions. For the more active there is tennis and snooker at the Hill Club, jogging around the Race Course, and golf at the century-old Nuwara Eliya Golf Club with its tight fairways and testing greens. For nature lovers, visit Victoria Park with its landscaped gardens and Himalayan migratory birds such as the Kashmir Flycatcher, Pied Thrush Indian Pitta and the Indian Blue Robin. A guided tour around a tea estate and factory is an enlightening experience where you can learn about the process of tea production before it reaches your cuppa. It also provides an opportunity to buy the best grades of up-country tea.
