Excursions
Explore the surrounding village of Thalahena with its Dutch period churches or take a stroll across the road to the beach and take in the magnificent sunset. Venture further off into the heart of Negombo lined with beachside hotels, restaurants, and cafes. Ride on a catamaran with the local fisherman as it sets sail in to the sunset. Take boat ride along the old Dutch canals that wind through the town. For those interested in nature and the wilderness, take a boat ride into the Muthurajawela wetlands which cover an area of about 6,000 hectares. The daily high tide brings in seawater from the ocean into the wetland. Continuous mixing of these two waters over thousands of years, has led to a brackish, integrated coastal ecosystem that is biologically diverse and teeming with life. Numerous species of birds, butterflies and fish, some of which are endemic, are found in this habitat. Crocodiles, monitor lizards, and Sri Lanka’s largest snake – the Python, is also found here.
