Location
Blue Heights is a spacious four-bedroom beach villa in the deep south, perched on a hillock overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Situated in the coastal village of Hirikitiya, 2 kms south of Dickwella, Blue Heights is conveniently placed to explore the secluded beaches, wildlife sanctuaries and the southern cultural heritage. One and a half hours west from here is Galle and about two hours east is the Yala National Park. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about six hours or consider taking the Air Taxi and fly into Koggala which is about an hour away from here.
Introduction
Set back on a sloping hill leading to the sea, Blue Heights consists of the main house with one bedroom, living and dining spaces and a separate chalet with additional three bedrooms all overlooking the gardens, swimming pool and the sea at a distance. Designed by Sri Lankan architect Amila De Silva, Blue Heights has a contemporary feel with ochre-coloured walls, cooling cement floors, timber ceilings and large open spaces that let in the ocean breeze. Stroll downhill and you get to the secluded cove like beaches of Hiriketiya. Blue Heights can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests and is only rented to one party at a time ensuring complete privacy.

Accommodation
The upper floor of the main house has one ensuite double room opening out to a spacious private balcony with garden and sea views. The adjoining two storey chalet has a large master suite on the upper floor leading to a spacious balcony with built-in seating which is ideal for alfresco dining. The ground floor of this chalet has two double rooms opening out to a verandah with garden views. Ensuite bathrooms are stylish with polished cement walls and flooring, single or twin vanities, and h/w showers. In-room facilities include overhead fans, built in cement or timber beds fitted with mosquito netting, lounge chairs and built-in cupboards. The master suite has an electronic safe.
Facilities
The main house has a spacious, open-plan living and dining area furnished with lounge chairs and a 10-seater dining table. There is a den with plush sofas, TV and DVD player, and telephone. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, cooker and oven. Guests can choose to prepare their own meals or have Sri Lankan meals prepared by the cook. Fresh seafood and vegetables can be purchased at the village market or from the supermarket in Dickwella. The swimming pool with Jacuzzi is situated under the shade of coconut trees. The gardens are frequented by plenty of birds including peacock, porcupine and rabbits. The beach can be accessed from the garden and a five minute stroll along the beach takes you to the Hirikitiya Bay which is ideal for swimming during the season. A helpful couple, Romiel and Sita, manage Blue Heights for the Sri Lankan and French owners who live overseas. While Romiel does maintenance and grocery shopping, Sita oversees cooking and housekeeping.
Excursions
The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and Spinner Dolphins. During the season from December to April, whale and dolphin watching excursions are organised by Mirissa Water Sports and Ceylon Fisheries Corporation based at the Mirissa harbour. Mirissa Water Sports also offers a range of activities including coastal cruises, sea kayaking, snorkelling and boating. Scuba diving is possible at Dickwella which is just 15 minutes away. Go on an adventurous jeep safari to Yala National Park, one of the largest national parks in the island where elephant and leopard can be spotted. Visit the ancient Mulkirigala temple in Tangalle which is perched on an enormous boulder more than 200m high. According to ancient inscriptions carved on the rock, Mulkirigala dates back almost 2,000 years when it was a site of a Buddhist monastery. We also recommend a visit to Galle’s 17C Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow streets lined with Dutch and British colonial era buildings which are still in use, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the lighthouse and a growing collection of shops, art galleries, restaurants and cafes.
