Location
Sethawadiya Dolphin View Eco Lodge is a rustic eco-retreat on the north-west coast with just four cadjan thatched cottages overlooking the scenic Dutch Bay and the Indian Ocean beyond. Situated on the outskirts of Kalpitiya, at the tip of the peninsular, several interesting excursions are possible from here including a boat ride to Wilpattu National Park – a great way to spend a day - snorkelling in the Bar Reef and exploring some of the 14 small islands off the coast. Kalpitiya is about three hours north from Colombo on the main A3 route, past Negombo and Chilaw. The journey from the Bandaranaike International Airport is about 2.5 hours.
Introduction
Sethawadiya is named after a small fishing village near Kalpitiya, in a relatively undiscovered corner of the island. This is a land of secluded beaches, palm trees, salterns, wild donkeys, and fisherman in their traditional `theppam’ boats tending to their daily catch. Sethawadiya is situated on a narrow strip of land with the salterns on one side and the tranquil Dutch Bay on the other. A sandbank edges the Bay and beyond is the shimmering waters of the Indian Ocean which can be easily accessed via a 10-minute boat ride. Sethawadiya offers simple barefoot living with clean and comfortable accommodation, a beautiful setting amidst nature and rural village life, and activities including boating, fishing, snorkelling and whale and dolphin watching during the season. Nature and environmental conservation is paramount. Sethawadiya, a remote village, doesn’t have mains electricity, but a generator is run from dusk til 11 in the evening. A crackling bonfire and oil lamps keeps the place well lit and ocean breezes cools the rooms at night.

Accommodation
There are four separate chalets of which Red Dot recommends chalets 1 & 2, situated on the left of the restaurant pavilion looking out to the Bay. These are light and airy and have their own fenced-in garden, providing more privacy. The rustic and eco-friendly chalets are constructed with jute covered walls, polished cement floors, cadjan thatched roof and set amidst a small sandy garden fenced with dried palm leaves. Windows open out to breathtaking views of the Dutch Bay and bring in the ocean breeze. The rooms are furnished with built-in large cement beds with mosquito netting and comfortable mattresses dressed in white linen. The ensuite bathrooms are designed with twin vanities and open-air shower which is the ideal place from which to catch a glimpse of the spectacular sunrise over the salterns. Sethawadiya has two more small cottages on the right side of the restaurant pavilion overlooking the Bay. One has a double room, small bathroom with shower, and private verandah. The other has a single bedroom opening out to a verandah. This cottage has access to the bathroom in the restaurant area.
Facilities
A spacious open-sided cadjan thatched pavilion houses the restaurant. Sri Lankan cuisine and some western dishes are served here. Sea food including crabs and prawns are a speciality and is cooked to your liking. Alcoholic beverages are not available, but guests are welcome to bring their own. Sethawadiya has its own motor boat, fishing and snorkelling gear. The manager, chef and two housekeeping staff are all very helpful and will ensure you have a wonderful holiday.
Excursions
Take a boat ride across the bay to the sandbank and then walk along the miles of secluded beach. Swimming in the seas here is possible during the season. The Bar Reef offers much to see for marine enthusiasts with an array of exotic tropical fish, stingrays and several species of marine turtles. Explore the many small islands off the coast which are home to a wide variety of birds. During the season from November to April, thousands of dolphins can be spotted off the coast from Kalpitiya. Go further into the deep seas, and if you are lucky, you may even spot a blue whale. Sethawadiya can also organise a boat ride along the Dutch Bay to the Wilpattu National Park. Plenty of wild animals can be spotted on the banks as you meander along. Explore the town of Kalpitiya and the Dutch period church – St. Anne’s in Thalawilla.
