Location
Chaaya Citadel sits at the edge of the Mahaweli River on the northern outskirts of the hill-country capital of Kandy. 'Chaaya' means an 'image' or 'reflection'. Thus, Chaaya Citadel is an extension or representation of its surroundings, remaining attuned to its Kandyan heritage. Kandy, a 3-hour drive from Colombo, retains a traditional Sri Lankan lifestyle. The Temple of the Tooth, which houses the sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha is one of the many important sites to visit.
Introduction
Chaaya Citadel offers luxurious accommodation with scenic views. This reliable 3/4-star hotel has been rebranded and refurbished, and provides tranquil surroundings away from the busy city of Kandy. Days begin to the sound of birdsong and perhaps a warm mist rolling away from the river. The riverside setting also adds lustre to the twilight hours.

A full refurbishment completed in October 2006, has resulted in luxurious and comfortable ensuite rooms. Most of the rooms face the Mahaweli River and provides scenic views from the private balcony. The interiors are furnished with colours and fabrics that are in keeping with traditional Kandyan style. There are 24 deluxe rooms and suites and 97 superior rooms. Superior rooms have a/c, satellite TV, minibar, in-room safes, and IDD phones. Deluxe rooms also have DVD player and more luxurious interiors with traditional hand-woven hangings.
Facilities
The spacious main restaurant with views of the Mahaweli, offers international buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner. Chaaya Citadel is rare among Kandy hotels in having an a la carte restaurant, with a refined ambience and superior cuisine. Airy lobby bar. The pool area has a children's area and a broad terracotta sun terrace where you can enjoy the spectacular sunsets beyond the hills. Snooker, table tennis, and the usual collection of indoor games.
Excursions
Chaaya Citadel is the most conveniently placed of Kandy's hotels for a boat trip down the Mahaweli - take the `Scenic Way' excursion and complete your boat trip with a candlelit dinner on the riverside. Other tours could include the `Temple Tour' - covering Kandy's ancient temples and shrines - or a hike along the Hantana mountains, Udawatte Kelle forest reserve, and the botanical gardens. The hotel also offers the `Cultural Trail' - a study of Kandy's arts and crafts including drum making, Dumbara mat waving, and jewelry crafting.
