Location
Polwaththa Eco Lodge is a rustic nature retreat situated on an 11-acre fruit and vegetable plantation in the remote village of Wepathana, which is about 45 minutes north of Kandy. This peaceful and rustic holiday retreat is a nature lover’s paradise and is reached via the Kandy – Mahiyangana road (route A26) via Digana. The journey to Kandy from Colombo’s international airport will take about 3.5 hours.
Introduction
Polwaththa Eco Lodge was created by its Sri Lankan owner who is originally from this Kandyan village and does much to benefit the surrounding village community. His Dutch wife is an ardent trekker and is well versed with the area. She will be happy to accompany guests on their treks. The Lodge follows eco-friendly practices of recycling wastes, harvesting rain water, and organic farming. There is no mains electricity here. Solar power is used to light up a few bulbs and provide hot water into the bathrooms. Relax on the verandah and take in the sounds of nature; go on a trek with a picnic lunch in hand; or visit the nearby village and learn of traditional Kandyan crafts.

Accommodation
Accommodation is in five simple, earthy cottages. Two are built on stilts which gives a feeling of being in a tree house. The cottages are scattered at different levels hugging the hilly terrain. Each cottage has a private verandah with wonderful views of the surrounding wilderness and some have views of the scenic Mahaweli River at a distance. Each of the rustic cottages has a spacious bedroom furnished with twin beds opening out to a private balcony with lounge chairs and a table where you can do a bit of writing, create a piece of art, or even have a candle lit dinner. The attached bathrooms have h/w shower, wash basin, and w/c. Red Dot recommends cottages three and four which are built on stilts and has better views. Cottage four is at the highest level on the hill and has views of the Mahaweli River at a distance.
Facilities
The restaurant, built with wood and thatched roof, is located a short walk from the wooden cottages. Traditional Sri Lankan rice and curries are served here made with fresh vegetables from their own home garden or purchased from the villagers. Food is cooked in clay pots over a hearth in traditional style. Some Western and Chinese dishes can also be whipped up by the chef upon request. Other facilities include a TV in the restaurant with cable channels and telephone.
Excursions
Birding is utterly rewarding here with over 60 species of birds recorded including 10 endemics. The Sri Lanka’s Grey Hornbill can be spotted easily here. Other animals that can be seen around the estate are barking deer, wild boar, torque monkey, porcupine, flying squirrel, and giant squirrels. There are several excursions on offer including treks into the village of Narapanawa passed paddy fields and ending at the Huluganga river where you can have a river bath. More intensive treks even into the Knuckles mountain range is possible from here. Visit a nearby village and learn of traditional Kandyan cottage crafts such as making of Kitul treacle and juggery, basket weaving, and making handloom textiles.
