River Grove is the home of a Sri Lankan couple who provide simple but welcoming accommodation. A short stroll to the Mahaweli River, River Grove is located off the Mawilmada Road and is about 15 minutes drive from Kandy town. The journey to Kandy from Colombo’s international airport will take about 3.5 hours.
Introduction
River Grove, set on a hillock in tropical gardens, is a homestay experience that provides an insight into Sri Lankan living and traditional cuisine. Owners, Raja and Shirani are very hospitable and will ensure guests have a relaxing holiday. River Grove is only occupied by the two of them and their staff. Shirani is an excellent cook and is happy to share her recipes with guests. Go bird watching along the Mahaweli River; visit Kandy’s ancient cultural sites or just relax in the garden with a cup of Ceylon tea. River Grove can accommodate four guests.

Accommodation
There are two double rooms one with an ensuite bathroom and the other with the bathroom located just across the hallway. Both bedrooms open out to a verandah and small back garden. Rooms have overhead fans, and are simple but comfortably furnished with a double bed, dresser and writing desk. Bathrooms have h/w shower, wash basin and w/c.
Facilities
Guests share the family living and dining rooms. If more privacy is preferred, you can choose to dine on the verandah. Sumptuous Sri Lankan and western cuisine is served here prepared by Shirani herself using fresh vegetables, spices and home made condiments. There is cable TV, telephone and internet access in the office room that guests are welcome to use.
Excursions
Go for a stroll down hill and along the Mahaweli River and watch life as it unfolds in the suburbs of Kandy. Bird watching is also rewarding with numerous species of hill country birds that can be spotted in the garden. Visit the Temple of the Tooth where a sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha is enshrined since 4th Century A.D. The temple has decorative walls, a golden roof and fine woodwork. Religious services (pooja) with traditional music and drumming are held daily at dawn, mid-day and in the evening where guests can participate. There are several other ancient temples including Gadaladeniya, Lankathillake, and Embekke which are well worth a visit. Experience Kandy’s rich ancient arts and crafts including drum making, Dumbara mat waving, crafting Kandyan jewelry, and traditional Kandyan dance and drumming. Nature lovers will enjoy a walk through the Peradeniya Botanical gardens with its 600 acres of tropical trees, landscaped gardens, and orchid collection.
