Sharon Inn is a ten-bedroom guesthouse perched on a hill in the heart of Kandy overlooking the city and the Udawatte Kelle Forest Reserve beyond. The property is accessed off the circular road around the Kandy Lake. The historic Temple of the Tooth is just ten minutes away. Sharon Inn can be used to break up a long journey or as a base from which to explore the Kandyan region. The drive from Colombo or the airport takes around three-and-a-half hours depending on traffic.
Introduction
Sharon Inn is beloved of Rough Guide and Lonely Planet budget travellers. It is a narrow four-storey structure with the rooms located on three floors, and a small roof top terrace with views of the city of Kandy. The living and dining areas are on the ground floor. Owned by a German and Sri Lankan couple, the property is clean, efficiently run and full of charm. Such attributes are carried into the bedrooms, which are immaculate without being sterile. Since accessing the rooms involve several flights of steps, it is not recommended for those with physical disabilities.

Accommodation
Sharon Inn has ten bedrooms - seven doubles and three triples furnished with single beds that can be put together or used separately. Although the rooms are quite small, some have the added bonus of a balcony from which you can enjoy a privileged view of Kandy. The rooms all have TVs, mosquito netting and overhead fans which are sufficient in the cooler Kandy climate. The ensuite bathrooms have solar powered h/w showers, wash basin and w/c.
Facilities
There is plenty of communal space, including a relaxed dinning room and living area opening out to a well-kept lawn. Sri Lankan and western meals are served in the dinning area where you can also use the internet and phone facilities. Special dinners are also organised on the rooftop upon request with the twinkling city lights of Kandy town in full view. While the standards are high at Sharon Inn, the price remains competitive and loyalties strong towards the guesthouse traveller with an independent streak.
Excursions
Explore the city of Kandy, steeped in history and culture. Walk around the tranquil Kandy Lake and visit the Temple of the Tooth where a sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha is enshrined since 4th Century A.D. The temple has decorative walls, a golden roof and fine woodwork. Religious services (pooja) are held daily at dawn, mid-day, and in the evening where guests can participate. The services are accompanied with traditional music and drumming. We also recommend: a visit to Peradeniya's Royal Botanical Gardens with over 60 hectares of tranquil, immaculately designed lawns, borders, pavilions and plant houses; nature walks in Udawatte Kelle Forest Reserve; and Kandy's rich ancient arts and crafts including drum-making, Dumbara mat-weaving and Kandyan jewelry.
