Mount Lavinia House is a six-bedroom beachside guest house located at the end of a quite residential street in Colombo’s southern beach satellite of Mount Lavinia. The centre of Colombo is about 20 minutes away by taxi or tuk-tuk. The journey from the international airport will take about 1.5 hours.
Introduction
Mount Lavinia House is an upmarket guesthouse with a boutique feel. The property, small and personable, is especially convenient for those entering and exiting Sri Lanka. This three-storey guest house is set in a high-walled private garden that provides the kitchen with many of its fruits and vegetables. The communal areas are spacious with a living room downstairs and a top deck which has good sea views. The centrepiece of the downstairs is an elongated indoor-outdoor swimming pool that stretches past the dining room into the garden. Late sleepers might find the nearby train track a bit of a downside. Those looking for a self-catering apartment, might want to consider the new sister property right next door – Mount Lavinia Residence.

Accommodation
With a maximum capacity of 10 people, Mount Lavinia House has six themed rooms to choose from: Arcadia which is a single room located on the ground floor; the spacious Master Suite, the Palm, Peacock and Lion Rooms situated on the first floor and for those who like eccentric boudoir-chic, the Fantasy Suite located on the top floor. All rooms have a/c accept for the Fantasy Suite. Interiors are tastefully decorated and furnished with solid teak four-poster beds, planter’s chairs and work desks. Rooms are spacious and open out to private balconies. Some rooms have sea views. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers. Note that the Fantasy Suite, which has a circular bed and several quirky twists, is not en suite. An antique screen provides cover as you dash to the "jungle" bathroom.
Facilities
Mount Lavinia House does not have the facilities of a modern Colombo hotel but it does offer plenty that the large hotels don’t have: a sense of privacy and home comfort, wonderful tropical garden, a private swimming pool, an enormous show kitchen where the chef often holds cookery demonstrations for guests, and lots of areas to relax and unwind. The ground floor lounge and dining area has Wi-Fi facilities. The office has fax and IDD telephone. The top floor sitting room has satellite TV with a variety of international channels, a library and wonderful sea views. Sri Lankan and western dishes are served here prepared to your liking. Dine on fresh seafood including crabs, prawn and lobster with the Indian Ocean lapping at your feet at their latest addition – a beach hut restaurant located just across the house. There are also several good bars and restaurants just a short stroll away.
Excursions
Explore the coastal town of Mount Lavnia with its characterful beachside bars, cafes and restaurants and wayside boutiques. Take a tuk-tuk (trishaw) ride into Colombo which is an interesting mix of the old and the new. Visit ancient Buddhist temples including the Bellanwilla Temple, ornate Hindu Kovils and Dutch period churches. The national museum, art galleries, shops, restaurants, night clubs, and spas are all located within 15 minutes drive.
