Kalla Bongo is a welcoming 15-room guesthouse inland from Hikkaduwa on the west coast. Situated on a hillock that slopes down to the Hikkaduwa lake, this scenic and tranquil location is ideal for a peaceful holiday. The sandy beaches of Hikkaduwa are just 2 kms away and the southern town of Galle is about half an hour away. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take more than three hours.
Introduction
Kalla Bongo sits on an acre of terraced land scattered with palms and tropical foliage. The gardens slope down gradually to the Hikkaduwa Lagoon with its myriad of small tributaries and mangroves that attract many species of birds. The bedrooms are located at the top of the hill and some halfway down allowing for spectacular lake views. The restaurant, bar and lounge area is by the lake side. Guests can choose to arrive at Kalla Bongo by boat along the lake or by car via Hikkaduwa. The boat ride coming in from Thotagama is highly recommended. Kalla Bongo is the creation of its Dutch owner and the Sri Lankan staff will ensure that you have a relaxing holiday.

Accommodation
Red Dot recommends the 10 superior double rooms located right at the top of the hill. These rooms are bright and airy and have white cement floors, white walls infused with colour and private balconies overlooking the swimming pool, gardens and the lake beyond. These rooms are furnished with double beds. There are an additional five rooms lower down closer to the lake which are smaller and open out to small private verandahs. Rooms are furnished with twin beds. All rooms have a/c, overhead fans, and coffee/tea facilities. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers and some have bathtubs.
Facilities
There is an open-air restaurant and bar that serves a range of light meals, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. The lounge and indoor restaurant is located at the edge of the lake. Sri Lankan and western cuisine is served here. Other facilities include a swimming pool, watersports on the lake including wake boarding, boat rides, kayaking, fishing and fun tubes. Kalla Bongo is a treat for nature lovers with numerous species of birds hovering about including Brahmini Kites.
Excursions
Explore the coastal town of Hikkaduwa with its many beachside bars, cafes and a scattering of night clubs. This youthful and informal town is full of character and has one of the best surfing beaches in Sri Lanka. Scuba diving and snorkelling is also possible here. Visit Galle’s 17C Dutch Fort, a UNESCO world Heritage Site. An entire morning can be spent exploring the maze of narrow roadways lined with Dutch and British Colonial era buildings that are still in use, sturdy ramparts overlooking Galle’s international cricket stadium, and scattering of shops, art galleries, museums, boutique hotels and cafes.
