Saffron & Blue is an exquisite four-bedroomed beach villa in the quiet coastal village of Kosgoda on the south-west coast. Kosgoda is half an hour south of Bentota where there are plenty of watersports on offer and the historic town of Galle is about an hour further south. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about three-and-a-quarter hours.
Introduction
Saffron & Blue is the magnificent creation of Sri Lankan architect Channa Daswatte. Spread over three floors, the villa has high timber roofs, polished cement floors, large windows and courtyards and verandahs that welcome the tropical sun and ocean breeze. The interiors are a mix of contemporary furniture, vibrant local art and Balinese accents. The ground floor consists of living, dining areas and one double room. An additional three bedrooms are on the second floor overlooking the gardens, swimming pool and the ocean beyond. Upto eight guests can be accommodated comfortably. Saffron & Blue is also ideal for a special celebration and with prior notice, the owner will organise the complete event. Due to the heights and many stairs to climb, within this beach villa, it is not recommended for very young children and adults with mobility difficulties.

Accommodation
There are four spacious bedrooms, of which one is on the ground floor and has a dressing area, ensuite bathroom and stairway leading to a loft/lounge area; three additional bedrooms are located on the second floor. All have ensuite bathrooms with h/w rain showers. Two bedrooms on the second floor haveoutdoor Jacuzzis overlooking the sea. All four bedrooms at Saffron & Blue have wonderful sea views. Overhead fans and the ocean breeze help to keep the rooms cool and airy. Room interiors are decorated in vibrant colours and are furnished with king size beds dressed in fine linen.
Facilities
There are plenty of places indoors and out to relax and unwind. Sink into a comfy sofa on the ground floor lounge overlooking the gardens, or in the upstairsden equipped with cable TV, DVD player with surround sound, CD player, mini-fridge, and board games. Meals are served in the ground floor dining room furnished with a wooden square table for 12 or in the patio by the poolside. There is a fully-equipped pantry with fridge, freezer, cooker, and microwave. Guests can choose to do their own cooking or the in-house cook will be happy to prepare Sri Lankan meals, whip up a few grilled dishes, or even seafood BBQ. He will also assist with grocery shopping. Guests are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages. The gardens at Saffron & Blue are scattered with coconut palms and frangipani trees. There is a 40 ft swimming pool with a poolside terrace. Safe swimming in the ocean right in front of the villa is possible during the season from December to April.
Excursions
The beaches of Kosgoda are often visited by giant marine turtles that come ashore to nest. The process of nesting, hatchlings being born, and swimming back to sea is an ancient and phenomenal ritual that is fascinating to observe. If you don’t spot one on the beach, then visit Kosgoda’s marine turtle hatchery – a valuable conservation project that protects the endangered Marine Turtles of Sri Lanka. Venture off to Bentota where numerous watersports are on offer including surfing, snorkelling, and jet skiing. Take a boat ride along the tranquil Madu River past quaint rural villages, en route, visit the local markets, temples & craft and antique shops. We also recommend a visit to Lunuganga –a garden retreat that was created by Geoffrey Bawa. The Lunuganga gardens were a life long project cherished by Bawa and designed with numerous varieties of foliage, many pavilions, and statues. Visit Galle’s 17C Dutch Fort, a UNESCO world heritage site with a maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings still in use, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, and a growing collection of art galleries, shops, cafes and boutique hotels.
