Set amidst lush tropical wilderness in a sparsely-populated and beautiful part of the island, this is a nature lovers’ dream. Designed by Sri Lanka’s iconic landscape artist and architect, Laki Senanayake, Aanawila is an eco-friendly bungalow constructed of recycled materials such as old wooden railway sleepers. It has half-walls throughout to help keep the property airy and cool. Nature lovers will be thrilled with the open-sided lounge, where they will be awaken early by bird calls and lulled to sleep by crickets. The picturesque woodlands of Wilpattu are on the doorstep: be prepared for the occasional frog indoors or even a wild elephant roaming about in the gardens. Aanawila does not have grid electricity, but ample solar powered lights are available. A generator is used only to pump water to the in-house tank which ensures tap water in the bathrooms and kitchen. Aanawila can accommodate up to eight guests comfortably and is rented on a bungalow only or full-board basis.
