Taragala Place is a wonderful guesthouse at the border of Kalmetiya Bird Sanctuary in the deep south, a simple retreat that will appeal to nature lovers. The Rekawa beach where the endangered marine turtles come ashore to nest is just 15 minutes from here. The coastal town of Tangalle is 45 minutes away.
Introduction
Taragala Place is a rustic eco-retreat that is named after the Taragala rock that is visible from the gardens. There are just two plain but comfortable cottages. Relax on the verandah and gaze across a lush tropical wilderness that is home to more than 180 species of birds. Go on a bird trail into the sanctuary or wander unhurriedly around the village of Kalametiya with its temples, paddy fields and wayside boutiques. Taragala Place has been caringly developed over the years by its Sri Lankan/British owners who live on the premises.

Accommodation
Two cottages with rust-coloured walls, timber roof and front verandah overlook Kalalmetiya sanctuary. Each has a bedroom with double bed fitted with mosquito netting, bathroom with wash basin, w/c, indoor as well as outdoor shower, and small pantry equipped with a fridge, cooker, a few saucepans, crockery and cutlery, and tea/coffee facility. Pedestal fans and the breeze help to keep the interiors cool. Taragala Place can accommodate up to four guests and is given out on a BB basis.
Facilities
Guests can do their own cooking or order from the in-house menu. Traditional Sri Lankan rice and curries cooked in clay pots is served here as well as some western dishes. Discuss your meal preferences with the owners ahead of time and meals will be prepared using fresh vegetables and fruit from the village home gardens and seafood purchased from local fisherman. Meals are served in your own verandah or at the main dining table in the garden. Freddie Feathers, the pet peacock, may wander by. There are two bicycles available fo guests to cycle to the beach or explore Kalalmetiya village. Safe swimming in the ocean is possible nearby during the season, from December to April.
Excursions
Trek to the Taragala rock and take in the spectacular views of the Kalametiya lagoon and the Indian Ocean. Go on a bird trail into the bird sanctuary which covers an extent of over 600 hectares of wilderness and lagoon. Go on a night safari to Rekawa beach and observe the giant marine turtles as they come ashore to nest. Globally, all seven species of marine turtles existing are endangered. Out of these seven, five species of sea turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka. The process of marine turtles nesting, hatchlings being born, and swimming back to sea is an ancient and phenomenal ritual that is fascinating to observe. Both Uda Walawe and Yala National Parks can be reached form here in less than two hours.
