Mas Villa is a five bedroom boutique hotel housed in a fully refurbished, century old Kandyan wallawwa overlooking the picturesque Kotmale reservoir in Kandy. The rural village of Kotmale is situated about 45 minutes from Kandy town and is en route to the hill station of Nuwara Eliya, which is about an hour away. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about 4.5 hours.
Introduction
Mas Villa is a two storey Kandyan Wallawwa (manor house) that dates back to the early - 1800s. In more recent times, it was the home of the late Gamini Dissanayake, a political leader who was responsible for the creation of the nearby Kotmale Hydro power plant in the 1980s. The Dissanayake family continues to own the property and following an extensive refurbishment, opened Mas Villa to welcome guests in September 2010. The original design features of this Kandyan Wallawwa including courtyards, verandahs and even the `atuwa’ (granary) that is so typical in these manor houses, has been retained and blended with all modern conveniences. The interiors are tastefully decorated with Dutch period antiques. Mas Villa can be booked per room or as a whole and can accommodate up to 10 guests.

Accommodation
There are five luxurious bedrooms all named after the foliage found in the garden. The interiors of each room are unique and tastefully furnished. Overhead fans help to keep the rooms cool. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers.

Deluxe rooms – Located on the ground floor, the two Deluxe bedrooms named Sanderiana and Calathea are furnished with king size beds and Heliconia is furnished with a queen size bed. All three Deluxe rooms have gardens views and opens out to the central courtyard at one end. In-room facilities include overhead fan and tea/coffee facility.

Superior room: Dracaena which is a spacious superior room, has a king size bed. This bedroom has cable TV, DVD player, mini-bar, tea/coffee facility and safe. The ensuite bathroom has a bathtub and h/w shower.

Master Suite: The entire first floor consists of the luxurious master suite – Cordyline, which has ceilings that are 20 ft high, wooden floors and surrounding glass windows that lets you take in the wonderful views. The interior is tastefully furnished with a king size four-poster bed. In-room facilities include cable TV, DVD player, surround sound system, mini-bar, tea/coffee facility, and safe. The ensuite bathroom here has a Jacuzzi and h/w shower. The Cordyline Suite comes with a butler who will ensure that you are well taken care of.
Facilities
The ground floor consists of spacious living and dining rooms that open out to magnificent views of the reservoir and the surrounding Kandyan hills at one end and the central courtyard at the other. The dining room is furnished with a dramatic 40 ft dining table and takes on a magical air at night in the glow of candle light. Sri Lankan and continental cuisine is served here. Guests can choose to dine in the main dining room, on the verandah or in the gardens. Other villa facilities include a lounge equipped with cable TV, pool table and indoor games; library, gym, croquet, badminton, swimming pool, and internet access. The in-house spa therapist offers a range of rejuvenating massages. The gardens at Mas Villa spread over eight acres that are scattered with tall tropical trees that attract numerous species of birds. Mas Villa also offers nature walks, mountain biking, and fishing expeditions.
Excursions
Explore the village of Kotmale with its wattle and daub village homes, terraced paddy fields, tea estates, and Buddhist temples. Go hiking, biking or bird watching in the surrounding area. Visit the Kotmale Hydro power plant which at one time, along with the other Mahaweli projects, supplied more than half of Sri Lanka’s energy requirements. Spend a morning’s excursion in the city of Kandy and visit the Temple of the Tooth where a sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha is enshrined; other ancient Buddhist temples including Gadaladeniya, Lankathilaka, and Embekke; and the Peradeniya Botanical gardens, with its orchid collection and formally laid-out trees. A day trip to the hill station of Nuwara Eliya is also possible from here.
