Location
Kalundawa Retreat is a tempting lakeside villa in a peaceful village near Dambulla in the cultural triangle. Rented villas are rare in this region and this one, on a 115-acre site with shimmering hills as a backdrop, is a convenient base from which to explore Sri Lanka's cultural sites. The journey from Colombo will take about four hours.
Introduction
Kalundawa Retreat is an a/c luxurious villa created by a young Sri Lankan architect, Sarath Liyanage. High timber roofs, polished cement floors and large glass windows offer spectacular jungles and lake views. The stylish, minimalist interiors are highlighted with art by Laki Senanayake. It is situated in the middle of a man-made lake that is strewn with mangroves and tall tropical trees that attracts exotic birds and butterflies. Arrive at the estate, and drive through to the reception/dining area over looking the paddy fields at one end and the lake at the other. To get to the villa, take a 10 minute ferry ride winding around massive Milla trees that grows in the water; or take a short walk along a gravel path. You can be active and go on nature trails, village walks and bird watching; or merely take in the peace and tranquility. Kalundawa Retreat is rented on a bed and breakfast basis can comfortably accommodate up to four adults and a child. It is not suitable for very young children due to the surrounding lake. Kalundawa is also ideal for a romantic honeymoon.

Accommodation
There are two luxurious a/c double rooms – one on each floor. The spacious bedrooms have timber flooring and great views. The luxurious interiors are furnished with king-sized beds dressed in fine white linen, wardrobe, and work desk. Ensuite bathrooms have twin vanities, h/w rain showers and bathtubs. In-room facilities include plasma TV with satellite channels, DVD player, iPod doc, tea/coffee facility, mini-fridge, bathrobe and slippers, and hair dryer.
Facilities
The ground floor consists of a lounge/dining area opening out to a plunge pool and lake beyond. There is a second lounge area and library upstairs, and a small pantry equipped with fridge, cooker, microwave, crockery and cutlery. Guests can choose to dine in the villa or across the water at the reception/dining area. There is a set menu of Sri Lankan and western dishes. Meals are prepared with rice, fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruit grown on the estate. Nature lovers will revel in these idyllic surroundings with plenty of bird watching and trekking. Kalundawa Retreat also offers boating, fishing and cycling. The staff here includes a manager who also overlooks the plantation and is happy to take you around on a conducted tour; chef, housekeeping staff, and personal butler for the villa.
Excursions
Stroll around a 115-acre plantation cultivated with rice, vegetables, fruit, herbs and more than 400 varieties of medicinal plants. Guests can even work in the rice paddies along with the villagers, or pick their own vegetables. Go bird watching or walking. Visit Dambulla’s ancient cave temple consisting of a complex of Buddhist image houses. Its rock ceiling is one large sweep of colourful frescoes, some of which date back more than 2,000 years, depicting Buddhist mythology and the tales of the Buddha's previous births. This cave temple has the largest number of Buddha statues all housed in one place, including a 14m-long figure of the recumbent Buddha carved out of the rock. Venture further away to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Sigiriya, Ritigala, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa - all located within 30-90 minutes drive from here.
