Beyond Bawa
Snapshot
Architecture in Sri Lanka continues to evolve with a strong Bawa influence as well as more contemporary design with young architects experimenting with different design styles and building materials including steel, timber, granite, terracota and glass for homes, hotels, and public buildings.

Contemporary Architects of Sri Lanka
Architecture in Sri Lanka continues to evolve with a strong Bawa influence as well as more contemporary design with young architects experimenting with the infusion of colour and more use of steel, timber and glass for homes, hotels, and public buildings. Architects including Channa Daswatte and Anjalendran, protégés of Geoffrey Bawa, are much sort after and have created several exquisite boutique villas and hotels in Sri Lanka and in Asia. Some of Channa’s works includes the refurbishment of Galle Fort Hotel in Galle Fort, Frangipani Tree in Habaraduwa, Kurulu Bedda of the Light House Hotel in Galle. Chelvadurai Anjalendran’s vibrant colours and creative design can be seen at Mirissa Hills – Mt. Cinnamon and Bamboo Villa in Victoria Golf & Country Resort. Architect Philip Weeraratne’s designs are described as `Tropical Modern’ with a plan that is more open ended with the use of glass, steel and timber allowing for surrounding views. His works include Silva Tree in Unawatuna and Saffron’s Beach House in Habaradwa. Sunela Jayawardene, an environmental architect, has succeeded in designing hotels that lets you be one with nature. Her creations include Vil Uyana and Havelock Place Bungalow. The Boulder Gardens situated nearby Sinharaja rainforest was designed by Lalin Collure who won the prestigious Geoffrey Bawa Trust award in July 2008 for this hotel design.

Lifestyle Designers
Lifestyle designers are also now extending their creative talents to interior design and refurbishment of colonial properties. Nayantara Fonseka – also known as Taru, has created fabulous holiday properties including the River House and Taru Villas Taprobana in Bentota, Park Street Hotel in Colombo and the Tamarind Hill in Galle. Shanth Fernando’s creative skills at designing signature homewear and exquisite interiors were extended to the creation of Tintagel – a boutique hotel in Cinnamon Gardens in Colombo 7. Another colorful personality is Saran whose works include the Hayleys villa in Galle Fort and Villa OneTwoFive in Habaraduwa.
