Pigeon Island Resort is a mid-range beach hotel in the coastal village of Nilaveli which is 16 kms north of Trincomalee on the East coast. Trincomalee can be accessed on the A6 route from Habarana in the Cultural Triangle and takes about 2.5 hours. The journey from Colombo will take approximately 6.5 hours via Habarana.
Introduction
Pigeon Island Resort is named after Pigeon Island that lies offshore and can be seen from the hotel. The coral reef that surrounds this island is home to exotic species of reef fish and colourful coral making it popular for snorkelling. The hotel opened in September 2010 following an extensive renovation of its bedrooms and service areas and stands on a narrow strip of land that extends up to the turquoise seas.

Accommodation
There are 36 bedrooms and six suites all with garden views. Only the corner suite at the very end of the hotel faces the sea. In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, cable TV, telephone, and mini-bar. Ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers. The suites are more spacious and consist of a bedroom, living/dining area, and pantry facility.
Facilities
The main restaurant serves Sri Lankan and international cuisine. There is also a coffee shop and bar, fitness centre, and swimming pool. The hotel organises whale and dolphin watching excursions and snorkelling trips to Pigeon Island. Safe swimming is possible in the ocean during the season.
Excursions
Pigeon Island, a breeding site for Blue Rock Pigeon, is located just a short boat ride offshore from the hotel and is an ideal location for half-day snorkelling excursions. Explore the history of Trincomalee town. Visit Fort Frederick, first used by the Portuguese in 1624, followed by the Dutch and later by the British. At the northern tip of Fort Frederick is a cliff known as “Swami Rock” which drops around 360 feet (110 metres) into the sea below. On its pinnacle is the Tirukonesvaram Hindu Kovil. Colourful “Poojas” or religious services are conducted here at dusk. The view of the natural harbour and the Indian Ocean is breathtaking.
