Panthera Lodge is a peaceful holiday bungalow overlooking a lagoon just outside the Yala National Park. It is only 1.5kms from the main road to Yala’s park entrance; Tissamaharama, with its ancient temples and lotus-filled reservoirs, is 45 minutes from here.
Introduction
Panthera Lodge is a basic, open-sided game lodge that will appeal to nature lovers seeking a plain, uncluttered lifestyle. The bungalow, designed by Sri Lankan architect Pradeep Kodikara, has an open lounge area that also converts into sleeping accommodation for up to six guests. There is a separate dining area and garden seating for those wanting to take in the sunsets or do a bit of bird watching. Jungle is at the doorstep here so be prepared for the occasional frog indoors. Panthera Lodge is rented on a bed and breakfast or full-board basis and can accommodate up to six guests.

Accommodation
This basic game lodge has a row of single beds in the lounge area, fitted with mosquito nets. There is also a double bedroom with twin beds. We recommend sleeping in the lounge which is cooler. The living room opens out to the garden and the lagoon beyond. There are two bathrooms with showers that are shared by all. The bed linen and basic toiletries are provided.
Facilities
The living area is furnished with recliners and the dining room has a cement table top that can seat eight guests. There is also a BBQ area outdoors in the garden. Sri Lankan rice and curries are served for lunch and for dinner the cook is able to prepare some western dishes if you wish or even a BBQ. There are two bicycles for those wanting to explore the surrounding rural village. Panthera Lodge has a cook and caretaker.
Excursions
A jeep safari into the Yala National Park is possible at dawn and again at about 3.30 pm. when the birds and animals are more visible. Red Dot can arrange a safari jeep to come directly to Panthera Lodge to get you to the park entrance by 6.00 am. The excursion can take up to three hours accompanied by a wildlife tracker. Yala National Park, with a total protected area of 126,768 hectares, is one of the best places to see a wide variety of Sri Lankan wildlife because of its scrub plains, lagoons and rocky sections. Boasting one of the world's densest leopard populations, Yala attracts many visitors. Yala is also home to herds of elephants, sloth bear, sambar, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles, monkeys and numerous species of birds. The ancient Kirinda temple, Tissamaharama with its ancient temples and reservoirs, and the jungle shrine of Kataragama can also be accessed from here.
