The Planter’s Bungalow, situated in the village of Karandagolla on the outskirts of Ella, is an old estate bungalow which is now converted into a wonderful four-bedroom guesthouse. It is set amidst an 11-acre organic fruit and vegetable estate off the Wellawaya road that leads from the highlands to the south coast and Arugam Bay. The journey from Colombo via Ratnapura will take about five hours or hop on board the train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella which travels past beautiful tea covered hills and misty mountains.
Introduction
Originally built in the 19C by a Scottish tea planter, the Planter’s Bungalow has three well-decorated bedrooms and a verandah restaurant. There is also a separate self-contained cottage which is ideal for a family. The current British owner, John, is an experienced chef and does all the cooking himself for the guests. Relax with a book and cup of tea on the verandah surrounded by lush tropical foliage and bird song or venture off on a mountain trek. Laid back and utterly relaxing, the Planter’s Bungalow offers a wonderful holiday experience in the picturesque southern highlands.

Accommodation
The Main House has three bedrooms all with private verandahs overlooking the lush green gardens. Each bedroom is unique and follows a different colour theme. Room interiors are tastefully decorated and furnished with twin or double beds and couches.

Yellow Room: This is a bright and airy room with twin beds that opens out a small verandah with planter’s chairs. Ensuite bathroom has a bathtub and h/w shower.

Red Room: This is accessed through the lounge area of the Main House and is furnished with a double bed. Those booking this room also have the choice of booking the lounge area which has a library and dining facilities.

Blue Room: The Blue Room opens out to a verandah and garden. Interiors are furnished with a four-poster double bed, couch and work desk. Ensuite bathroom has a bathtub and shower.

Planter’s Cottage: An independent cottage built on the site of the old stables. On the ground floor it has a comfortable double bedroom with a four poster bed and modern sprung mattress, bathroom and dining facilities. Its private terrace includes a dining area and a small summer kitchen fitted with a fridge, crockery and cooking facilities. There is an open-sided lounge area which can sleep two more guests upstairs. The dining area also has cooking facilities for those wishing to do their own cooking.
Facilities
If the Red Room guests have not booked the lounge in the Main house, then all guests are welcome to use the lounge, library, and the indoor dining facilities here. Meals are served on the verandah overlooking the pond and gardens. Sri Lankan rice and curries are prepared by the cook. John’s specialises in French cuisine and seafood dishes. He also bakes his own bread. The gardens here are scattered with vegetables, fruit and herbs. Guests can roam around and pick their own produce from the gardens and have it cooked to their liking. Other facilities include laundry service, internet facility and telephone. There is no television by choice.
Excursions
Take a stroll pass the neighbouring village school and on to the winding roads with beautiful mountain views. There are several treks and nature trails that guests can follow accompanied by one of the staff. Enjoy the tea experience with a walk through a tea plantation and a visit to a tea factory. Visit Ella town, spectacular Ella gap, Ravana falls and the ancient Dowa temple. Adisham - a Benedictine Monastery with centuries old stone buildings is an interesting excursion in Haputale. There are several picturesque waterfalls in the southern highlands including Dunhinda, Diyaluma, and Bambarakanda.
