Melheim Resort is a modern, nine-roomed hotel in the village of near Haputale. The southern highlands are known for a relatively cool and sunny climate and spectacular views across the southern plains. Haputale is convenient as a hill country base as well as a useful stopping-off point to Arugam Bay on the south-east coast, and the beaches of the south coast. Uda Walawe National Park is two hours south. The journey from Colombo via Ratnapura will take about five hours.
Introduction
Melheim Resort is perched on a hillock overlooking terraced gardens and bordered by forest reserves. The landscape can be enchanting here, with morning mists often rising from the valley below to reveal blue skies or a rush of colour approaching nightfall. The reception/ lounge and restaurant are situated at the top level with the nine bedrooms spread across three separate buildings. Interiors are contemporary in design with timber decks, polished cement floors and large glass windows that allows for breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the southern plain. On a clear day, the views extend up to the Uda Walawe reservoir and the southern coast. Melheim is a peaceful and tranquil setting where the soothing sound of flowing water from a nearby stream, rustling leaves and bird call is a constant. For those wanting adventure, there are several mountain treks and nature trails. There is much climbing to do at Melheim Resort and therefore it is not recommended for those with mobility problems.

Accommodation
There are nine spacious bedrooms: seven doubles and two triples. The bedrooms are spread across three separate buildings with each opening out to a private balcony overlooking the gardens, swimming pool and mountains beyond. Rooms are comfortably furnished with twin or double beds, dressing table and work desk. In-room facilities include overhead fans (a/c is not required here due to the cool weather), cable TV, DVD player, mini-bar, tea/coffee facility, and hair dryer. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers.
Facilities
The restaurant consists of an indoor area as well as outdoors with beautiful views. Sri Lankan and western cuisine is served here as well as BBQs and special vegetarian dishes prepared to your liking. The immediate gardens are terraced and leads to the swimming pool and pavilion. Hours can be spent here lounging by the pool side and taking in the views. Snacks and drinks are served here in the pavilion. Mountain bikes are available for those wishing to explore the countryside.
Excursions
Venture off on a mountain trek or bird watching in the surrounding area of Haputale. Enjoy the tea experience with a walk through a tea plantation and a visit to Dambatenne Tea factory. Adisham - a Benedictine Monastery with centuries old stone buildings is another interesting excursion in Haputale. There are several picturesque waterfalls to be explored including Dunhinda, Diyaluma, and Bambarakanda. The small hill country town of Ella with the picturesque Ella gap, Ravana falls and ancient Dowa temple is about an hour north from here.
