Mandira Strathdon is a colonial-style bungalow in the outskirts of Watawala just minutes from Dickoya in the south-west highlands. Set over 4,000 ft above sea level, the bungalow is on a large tea plantation that covers over a thousand acres. Watawala can be accessed via Kitulagala and Ratnapura or via Nuwara Eliya which will take up about two hours.
Introduction
The Strathdon tea estate was first planted in 1913 by the Scottish Ceylon Tea Company. The Strathdon bungalow, built at the time, was originally home to tea planters who worked on the estate. The present Sri Lankan owners, Sunshine Holdings Company, have refurbished this bungalow retaining its old world charm. Perched on a hill overlooking the tea valley, Mandira Strathdon is flanked by three giant bamboo groves. The bungalow opens out to a manicured lawn edged by a balcony terrace with spectacular mountain views. Bungalow interiors have wooden floors and fireplaces and are equipped with modern conveniences. The bungalow can be booked by the room or as a whole and can accommodate up to 10 guests. Mandira also has two other tea plantation bungalows located in Dickoya that take in guests.

Accommodation
Mandira Stathdon has four bedrooms that are comfortably furnished with twin or double beds. Extra bedding can be put in if necessary. The ensuite bathrooms have bathtubs and h/w showers.
Facilities
There is a lounge area as well as a separate living room with a fire place that is lit on a cool night. The lounge is equipped with a 32 inch flat screen TV with cable channels, DVD player, DVD library and music system. Sri Lankan and western cuisine is on offer here. Meals are served indoors in the dining area, on the verandah or depending on the weather, outdoors in the garden overlooking beautiful tea hills and mountain peaks.
Excursions
Enjoy the tea experience with a stroll through the tea estate and visit to the Kenilworth tea factory. Go bird watching or trekking. Visit a local Hindu temple and the old Warleigh church overlooking the Castlereigh reservoir. Venture off to Nuwara Eliya for a day’s excursion and experience the colonial period architecture and even a round of golf at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club.
