Back of Beyond - Yala
Location
Back of Beyond Yala is a rustic eco-friendly, wattle-and-daub village home with a thatched roof set amidst the magnificent dry zone wilderness of Yala. True to its name, this is truly back of beyond where nature reigns supreme and is ideal for nature lovers and those wanting to experience traditional village living. Back of Beyond Yala is only just 15 minutes from the entrance gates to Yala National Park. The ancient temples of Tissamaharama, Kirinda, the jungle shrine of Kataragama, and the Bundala bird sanctuary are all located within 30 to 45 minutes from here. Yala can be accessed via the south coast or the hill country.
Introduction
Back of Beyond Yala is the fourth and latest creation of its Sri Lankan owner – an ardent lover of nature and rural Sri Lanka. Set on 10 acres of fenced-in wilderness, Back of Beyond Yala consists of a comfortable bedroom, dining area, and open-sided living area that has additional daybeds. Traditional Sri Lankan meals are served cooked in clay pots over a hearth.

Wake up at dawn to the sound of bird call and venture off on a jeep safari into the jungles of Yala. Return to a sumptuous Sri Lankan breakfast. By day, relax on the verandah with a good book and enjoy the unhurried life of this peaceful and remote setting. Those wanting more adventure can explore the ancient temples of Kirinda and Tissamaharama and even go on a second jeep safari in the afternoon.

Back of Beyond Yala follows a strict philosophy of nature conservation and uses solar energy for electricity, pipe born well water for the bathroom, and uses organic farming practices for cultivating fruits and vegetables. Nature is at your doorstep here so be prepared for the occasional frog indoors and insects at nightfall that gets attracted to lights. There are plenty of candle and oil lamps for those who prefer to use these instead. Up to five guests can be accommodated comfortably here. The other three much loved Back of Beyond properties are located in the Cultural Triangle and Kahandamodara on the south coast.

Accommodation
The bedroom is furnished with three twin beds fitted with mosquito netting and, a Dutch period antique wardrobe, and table fan to keep cool. There are two more day beds fitted with mosquito netting in the open-sided living area which is a cooler option and lets you sleep closer to nature. The bathroom facilities are share by all and consist of a separate toilet with w/c, separate shower area, and twin vanities. There is no hot water here which is not really necessary in this warm dry-zone climate.
Facilities
The dining area has an antique chest for storage and a six-seater table where Sri Lankan dishes are served in clay pots. Meals are prepared with fresh vegetables from the gardens or purchased from the surrounding villagers. Being situated in a remote area, the choice of meats would be restricted to chicken and fish. Meals are prepared in traditional village style over a hearth. Guests are welcome to bring their own beer or wine which can be kept cool in the main kitchen fridge. There is a team of staff here including a manager who also does the cooking, housekeeper and caretaker. The staff quarters are located just five minutes walk from the main house and guests are welcome to call on the staff at any time of day.
Excursions
A jeep safari into the Yala National Park is possible at dawn and again in the late afternoon when the birds and animals are more visible. Red Dot can arrange a safari jeep to come directly to Back of Beyond Yala to get you to the park entrance by 6.00 am or 4.00 pm. The excursion can take up to three hours accompanied by a wildlife tracker. Yala National Park is one of the best places to see a wide variety of Sri Lankan wildlife because of its scrub plains, lagoons and rocky sections. Yala is also home to herds of elephants, sloth bear, sambar, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles, monkeys and numerous species of birds.
