Tangalla Bay Hotel, originally built in the 1970s along the lines of a large cruise ship with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean from every angle, is located in the coastal town of Tangalle in the deep south. Set on four acres of beach front property strewn with palm trees, this is a distinctive mid-ranged beach hotel that will appeal to those looking for a holiday experience with a difference. Tangalla Bay is located off the main A2 Galle road and can be reached via the coast or the hill country. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take more than six hours so consider a stop en route.
Introduction
Tangalla Bay Hotel stands tall at the edge of the sea like a ship about to set sail into the Indian Ocean. Board this imaginative retro-ship and discover tall glass windows and portholes that let you gaze upon the surrounding turquoise seas. The 34 superior and deluxe rooms are laid out over four decks. Tangalla Bay was refurbished in 2011, updating its rooms with all modern conveniences. Management has been taken over by the Jetwing group.

Tangalla Bay has many stairways and is not recommended for those with mobility difficulties. While older children will find this a fascinating venue, it is not recommended for families with very young children. It should be noted that swimming in the sea right in front of the hotel is not possible due to a coral reef and undercurrents. A few minutes stroll along the beach takes you to a safer area where swimming is possible during the season from December to March.

Accommodation
There are 34 spacious a/c bedrooms all with a private terrace or balcony that open out to beautiful sea views. Interiors are furnished with twin or double beds. In-room facilities include overhead fans, cable TV, IDD telephone, tea/coffee facility, mini-bar, and electronic safe. Ensuite bathrooms have bathtubs and h/w showers.

Superior Rooms (260 sq.ft): There are 22 Superior Rooms all with sea views.

Deluxe Rooms (325 sq.ft): The 12 Deluxe Rooms are more spacious and also has spectacular sea views.
Facilities
Dine indoors or outdoors on the terrace by the sea. Sri Lankan, Asian and western cuisine is served here. Sea food dishes are a specialty here prepared with crabs, prawns and fish purchased directly from the local fisherman. The Promenade Bar offers a range of alcoholic beverages and is also equipped with a large LCD TV and indoor games such as carom and darts. The infinity swimming pool which also has a six seater Jacuzzi is located by the outdoor dining terrace. Other hotel services include internet facility, doctor-on-call, room service and laundry service. A baby sitter can be arranged with prior notice.
Excursions
Enjoy the spectacular beaches of Tangalle. Based at Mirissa Harbour, Mirissa Water Sports offers exciting water sports activities such as sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, sea kayaking, snorkeling and boating. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins. Whale watching excursions into the deep seas is organised by Mirissa Water Sports during the season from December to April when the seas are calm. Go on a night safari to Rekawa beach to observe the endangered marine turtles nesting. Visit the ancient Mulkirigala temple which is perched on an enormous boulder and according to ancient inscriptions carved on the rock, Mulkirigala dates back almost 2,000 years when it was a site of a Buddhist monastery. The ancient Kirinda temple, Tissamaharama with its pristine white temples and reservoirs, and the jungle shrine of Kataragama can also be accessed from here. Experience the wildlife parks of the south including Uda Walawe National Park where herds of wild elephant roam free and Yala National Park which is home to the elusive leopard, sloth bear, deer, and sambur. Bird watching is possible in the nearby Kalametiya bird sanctuary or at Bundala.
