Raaj Mahal is a century-old walauwa in the village of Egodawatte, ten minutes inland from Beruwela on the south-west coast. Raaj Mahal is an ideal first or last stop on a holiday to Sri Lanka. The journey from the international airport will take up to three hours.
Introduction
Raaj Mahal is a refurbished five bedroom manor house set amidst three acres of lush tropical gardens. Originally owned by a village headman, it was purchased in the 1980s by the current owners, the Raji family.

A new wing has been added to the old walauwa maintaining the original architectural features of courtyards and verandahs and ornate wooden trellises that edge the roof, doors and windows. Interiors are refurbished with Dutch period antiques and are equipped with modern conveniences. Old black and white photographs that tell of the Raji family history hang on the walls along with dramatic wildlife photos taken by the owner himself. The owner has a long history in the gem business and will share his knowledge and take you on a conducted tour to a gem mine and the nearby gem market where you can learn of mining, cutting and polishing, and setting of gem stones into intricate pieces of jewellery.

Raaj Mahal is rented exclusively and can accommodate up to 10 guests. Food is provided at cost price. Raaj Mahal is situated close to the local mosque and the brief call to prayer by the Muezzin can be heard during the day.

Accommodation
There are five spacious a/c bedrooms of which three open out to the courtyard and swimming pool; and two open out to the gardens. The bedrooms interiors are well furnished with king size four-poster beds dressed in fine white linen, couches and writing desks. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w rain showers.
Facilities
The main entrance leads you to a large living room with a library that has an interesting collection of books, pool table, 42 inch flat screen TV, DVD player and DVD library, and iPod doc. Dine in the formal dining hall or on the extensive 1,500 ft. verandah overlooking the gardens. Guests can choose to do their own cooking in the well equipped modern kitchen or have the in-house chef prepare the meals for you. Accompany him to the local fish market where fresh seafood including crabs, prawns and squid can be purchased directly from the fisherman. The large garden verandah is ideal for a family celebration and can accommodate up to 25 guests. Alcoholic beverages are not available, but guests are welcome to bring their own.

The gardens at Raaj Mahal are planted with fruit, coconut, and spices and extends into acres of terraced paddy fields and swamps. Bird watching is utterly rewarding here with several species of birds that can be spotted including Swamp hens, Egrets, Bee-eaters, Raptors such as Brahminy Kites, Crested Hawk Eagles and many others. Other villa facilities include a swimming pool set within a secluded courtyard, mountain bikes for exploring the village, indoor games, wifi internet facility throughout the house, a fully equipped pantry which even has a Cappuccino/Espresso maker and washing machine. Raaj Mahal is staffed with a cook, house keeper, and gardener.
Excursions
Go bird watching or cycle through the rural village of Egodawatte pass paddy fields, rubber estates, and wayside boutiques. This area has a multi-ethnic community and churches, mosque and temples are all located nearby. Visit the gem market and learn of Sri Lanka’s precious and semi-precious gem stones. Go for walks along the golden beaches of Beruwala. Safe swimming is recommended in Bentota where there are also several water sports on offer including surfing, snorkelling, and jet skiing. Experience Ambalangoda’s cultural heritage with a visit to the Ariyapala Mask Museum where intricate masks used in various southern traditional dance forms are on display. We also recommend a visit to Lunuganga –a garden retreat that was created by Geoffrey Bawa. The Lunuganga gardens were a life long project cherished by Bawa and designed with numerous varieties of foliage, many pavilions, and statues.
