The Ark is a wonderful three-bedroom eco-retreat perched high on a hillock in Mathugama in Sri Lanka's south west. Set amidst a 40-acre tea, rubber and cinnamon plantation, this is a tranquil inland setting. Mathugama is 65 kms south of the capital city Colombo and is within the district of Kalutara. The south western coastal towns of Kalutara, Beruwala and Bentota can be accessed from here. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about three hours which will be reduced considerably once the Southern highway is completed by the end of 2011. Once within the estate, the Ark is reached via a steep and winding road way which may require a 4WD.
Introduction
The Ark is a fascinating three-storey, metal structure that is designed to capture spectacular views of the valley below with lush green paddy fields, surrounding mountains, untouched wilderness and the tea and rubber plantation. Inspired by the ark-shaped, small cadjantree houses that are traditionally used by farmers to protect their crops from wild animals, The Ark is the creation of Sri Lankan architect Narein Perera. Drive up the winding roadway through the expansive tea and rubber estate, upto the car park. Take a short walk along a wooden pathand The Ark comes into full view rising above the trees. The first floor consists of an open sided living and dining area with surrounding views. The three bedrooms are located at levels below. An infinity pool rests amidst the foliage with spectacular views across the valley. The Ark is ideal for the adventurous, keen bird watchers, and those looking for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. Up to six guests can be accommodated here comfortably. The Ark is not recommended for those with mobility difficulties and young childrenbelow the age of 10 years due to the heights. The Ark is rented on an all inclusive basis.

Accommodation
There are three double rooms each located on levels below. Two bedrooms open out to a balcony and all have beautiful views of the valley and mountains beyond. The rooms are cooled with overhead fans and the tropical breeze that flows through. Interiors are furnished with double beds. Two additional camp beds are provided upon request. The attached bathrooms have h/w showers.
Facilities
The entrance level consists of an open plan living and dining area and a pantry. Living room is furnished with comfortable sofas that you can sink into that also serves as day beds; flat screen TV, DVD player, a collection of movies, iPod dock, books and some board games. The dining area has aneight-seater table and the pantry is equipped with a fridge and tea/coffee facility. The swimming pool is located a short walk away and is edged by a wooden deck where you can spend hours lazing on a lounge chair. Guests can choose to dine indoors or on the pool deck. Sri Lankan rice and curries, western meals, snacks and fresh juices are served here prepared with fresh fruit and vegetables from the estate or nearby village. Guests are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages. There are also mountain bikes for guests to use.The Ark is staffed with a chef and housekeeper who lives in separate quarters and is on hand when needed.
Excursions
Go trekking, bird watching or on a mountain bike trail. En route, cool of with a dip at the stream that flows at the edge of the property. There are plenty of the endangered Purple Leaf monkey and numerous species of birds that you will spot on your walks or even directly from the living room. Learn of Ceylon tea and plucking the precious two leaves and a bud, rubber tapping and Cinnamon that Sri Lanka is famous for. Explore the magnificent Sinharaja rainforest which is 45 kms away from here. The Sinharaja is home to a remarkable array of endemic bird species, insects, and tropical foliage and is a protected Man and Biosphere Reserve.
