Halketha is a guesthouse set amidst a peaceful 10-acre tea and rubber plantation in Mathugama 18kms inland from the popular west coast resort of Bentota and 65kms south of Colombo. Travel time from Colombo’s international airport is about three hours.
Introduction
Halketha consists of two charming chalets with verandahs that overlook lush green paddy fields, tall rubber trees and the tea plantation. Halketha is run by a Sri Lankan family that offers sumptuous home-cooked meals, hospitality, and a peaceful environment. Go on a nature trail, learn to cook Sri Lankan rice and curries, or lie in a hammock and do nothing. Halketha is ideal for writers, artists and nature lovers and is rented by the chalet. The rate is on an all-inclusive basis.

Accommodation
The two chalets – Surangana and Kashyapa are built somewhat away from each other providing for much privacy and is a short stroll away from the restaurant. The chalet interiors are vibrant and colourful and furnished with Dutch period antiques. Overhead fans help to keep the rooms cool and airy. Ensuite bathrooms have outdoor h/w showers.

Surangana: This is a one-bedroom chalet furnished with a king size bed fitted with mosquito netting, dressing table, and sofa. The bedroom opens out to a verandah where you can dine or do some writing looking on to the inspiring views of nature. Two people can be accommodated here.

Kashyapa: This is a two-bedroom chalet that sleeps four guests and opens out to a private verandah overlooking the badminton courts on one side and the landscaped gardens on the other. Kashyapa is furnished with two double beds, sofa, and mini-fridge.
Facilities
Meals are served at the main restaurant or in the privacy of your own chalet. The restaurant serves traditional Sri Lankan rice and curries and some western dishes prepared with fresh vegetables from the gardens or bought from the village market. Guests are welcome to go into the kitchen and learn Sri Lankan cuisine cooked in clay pots over a hearth. Alcohol is not served here, but guests are welcome to bring their own. The extensive gardens are well landscaped and full of flowers and fruit trees that attract numerous birds. Other animals that can be spotted here include wild boar, rabbits and monkeys. There is now swimming pool here, but there is plenty to do for the more adventurous including kayaking down the small man made lake, badminton, volleyball, nature trails, and bird watching.
Excursions
Explore the 10 acre tea and rubber estate and learn of tea plucking and rubber tapping. Go bird watching. Explore the magnificent Sinharaja rainforest which is 45 kms away from here. The Sinharaja is home to a remarkable array of endemic bird species, insects, and tropical foliage and is a protected Man and Biosphere Reserve.
