The Retreat is a four-bedroom plantation bungalow set on a 20-acre tea and rubber estate in Ingiriya close to Ratnapura. This is an ideal destination for trekking, bird watching and relaxation. Ingiriya is about 1.5 hours from Colombo and is en route to Ratnapura famous for its gem mining industry; Uda Walawe in the Buttala Foothills and Arugam Bay on the East coast. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take up to about three hours. The estate is located about 1.5 kms inland from the main Colombo – Ratnapura road on a rustic, gravel estate by road which may require a 4WD during certain times of the year.
Introduction
The Retreat is a refurbished old planter’s bungalow set on Ellakanda Estate and offers a low-country plantation experience. Take a walk through the plantation; stop to learn of tea plucking and rubber tapping; cool off with a dip in the stream or in the swimming pool once back at the bungalow. The Sri Lankan owner of The Retreat specialises in tea tasting and can organise a complete tea experience from the initial plucking of the two leaves and the bud, to tasting of different varieties of low country and up country teas, as well as a visit to Colombo’s buzzing tea auctions. The accommodation and facilities at The Retreat are simple but, comfortable. The bungalow can be booked per room or entirely and can accommodate up to eight guests.

Accommodation
There are four bedrooms of which two are furnished with twin beds; one has a double bed; and the master bedroom has a four-poster antique king-size bed. The master bedroom is more spacious than the others which are rather small in size. Bedroom interiors are basic, but clean and comfortable. Rooms are cooled with overhead fans. All the bedrooms have attached bathrooms with h/w showers.
Facilities
The living room is equipped with TV and DVD player. Guest can dine indoors or out on the verandah. Sri Lankan or western breakfast is served here. There is an in-house menu from which fresh juices, snacks and other meals including BBQs can be ordered. Alcoholic beverages are not available, but guests can bring their own. The immediate garden that surrounds the bungalow consists of a swimming pool and a waterfall that channels the water from a nearby spring. There are several places in the garden where you can sit and read a book or do some bird watching. Other animals such as wild boar, monkeys and porcupines can also be spotted here. The Retreat is staffed with a cook and house keeper.
Excursions
Set off on a nature trail with a picnic in hand. En route, stop to have a dip in the fresh water stream that flows across the estate. Go bird watching accompanied by one of the staff. Several endemic species can be spotted here. Try your hand at tea plucking or rubber tapping. Set off to Ratnapura for a gem experience. Visit a gem mine where precious gems such as rubies and sapphires as well as semi-precious stones, are mined according to traditional methods; watch as artisans cut and polish the gem stones and set them into intricate pieces of jewelry.
