Chaaya Tranz is a four-star beach hotel on a rocky outcrop at the northern end of Hikkaduwa beach on Sri Lanka's west coast. Previously known as Coral Gardens, the hotel received a substantial uplift and restyling in 2011 giving it a more colourful and vibrant ambience that fits in well with the youthful feel of Hikkaduwa. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about 3.5 hours. The historic city of Galle is half an hour away.
Introduction
Chaaya Tranz offers a successful blend of 4-star comfort with a laid back, informal feel. Inspired by the `Trance’ genre of music that is popular in this youthful beachside town, architect Channa Daswatte has made this old hotel come alive once again in keeping with the spirit of Hikka. Enter through the main doorways and into a courtyard surrounded by walls covered in vibrant local art. Continue onto the spacious verandah by the sea where the main restaurant, bar, and lounging areas are located overlooking the swimming pool. The luxurious bedrooms have private balconies with spectacular sea views. Interiors are bright and airy and are contemporary in design. Chaaya Tranz is managed by the excellent John Keells group who also owns several other Chaaya and Cinnamon hotel properties across Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Accommodation
There are 150 rooms: four Deluxe Rooms; 140 Superior Rooms; four Corner Suites with spectacular sea views on two sides; and two spacious Family Suites with in-room dining. All rooms lead on to private sea-view balconies furnished with comfortable cushioned seating. Bedroom interiors are stylishly furnished with twin or double beds and a day bed that can sleep a third guest. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers. In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, tea/coffee facility, mini-bar, 32 inch LCD TV, DVD player, IDD telephone, wifi internet, safety locker, room service, and laundry service.
Facilities
The main restaurant serves Sri Lankan and international cuisine buffet style. There is also a speciality crab restaurant, and coffee shop. A range of cocktails and other alcoholic beverages are severed at the pool bar with fabulous contemporary interiors. Unwind with a relaxing massage at the roof-top spa. Other facilities include a large swimming pool with a separate children’s pool; PADI certified dive centre; and an in-house excursions centre that organises interesting activities. Go on a whale and dolphin spotting excursion off the coast of Mirissa accompanied by a naturalist from the John Keells Nature Trails team.
Excursions
Go scuba diving and observe the exotic marine life that inhabits the coral reefs of Hikkdaduwa. About 200 metres offshore are several coral islets with colourful coral gardens, reef fish, and marine turtles. There are also several ship wrecks in the area that are waiting to be explored. Do a walk along Hikka’s main road dotted with wayside boutiques, beach bars, cafes, restaurants, and a scattering of nightclubs. This youthful and informal town is full of character and has one of the best surfing beaches in Sri Lanka. Visit Galle’s 17C Dutch Fort, a UNESCO world Heritage Site. An entire morning can be spent exploring the maze of narrow roadways lined with Dutch and British Colonial era buildings that are still in use, sturdy ramparts overlooking Galle’s international cricket stadium, and scattering of shops, art galleries, museums, boutique hotels and cafes.
