Waters Edge Tisawewa is a simple three-bedroom bungalow set amidst tranquil gardens overlooking the Tisa Wewa (reservoir) and three of Anuradhapura’s ancient temples. The historical sites of Anuradhapura are just 10 minutes away. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about 3.5 hours.
Introduction
Situated in the village of Pothangama, Waters Edge Tisawewa is a refurbished planter’s bungalow on a three-acre estate bordering the reservoir. The ancient stupas (temples) of Ruvanveli, Jetavanaramaya, and Mirisavetiya can all be seen from the verandah here, a particularly awe-inspiring site on a full-moon night. The gardens are scattered with tall tropical trees that attracts numerous birds and butterflies. Waters Edge Tisawewa offers comfortable accommodation, Sri Lankan cuisine, and a tranquil setting. The house can be booked in its entirety or by two parties at one time. Up to six guests can be accommodated. Waters Edge Tisawewa is managed by Back of Beyond which has several eco-retreats in the cultural triangle, south coast and Yala.

Accommodation
There are three double rooms of which one is an ensuite bedroom while the other two bedrooms share a bathroom. All bedrooms are equipped with overhead fans and are furnished with built-in double beds. The spacious and well designed bathrooms have h/w showers.
Facilities
The living and dining areas follow an open plan and has a verandah that opens to gardens and spectacular lake and temple views. There is an open-sided platform area in the living room with direct views of the temples which is ideal for yoga or meditation. There is wifi throughout the house. Sri Lankan cuisine is served here prepared with fresh vegetables, fruit, and meats purchased from the village. Guests can order their meals from the set menu. Waters Edge Tisawewa is staffed with a cook, house keeper and gardener.
Excursions
Take an early-morning walk to Tisa Wewa and watch as life unfolds – fisherman casting their nets, numerous birds flitting about, and the occasional monitor lizard floating by. Explore Anuradhapura’s magnificent ruins and temples. Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first capital was the greatest monastic city of the ancient world. A royal capital for more than 100 Sri Lankan kings, and was also home to thousands of monks from dozens of monasteries. Originally founded in the 4th century BC, it became the capital of Sri Lanka two centuries later. Anuradhapura is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are also several other ancient Buddhist sites including Mihintale, Aukana, Rajangana (Hasthikuchchi) Viharaya, Tantirimale, Ritigala and Yapahuwa which are well worth a visit and all within an half and hour to an hours drive from here. The Wilpattu National Park which is home to elephants, sloth bear and leopard is about an hour away.
