Villa Red is a luxurious five-bedroom villa in Bentota on the West Coast overlooking the Bentara River. The journey from Colombo’s international airport via the Southern Highway will take up to two hours. Travelling from Colombo along the coast will take about one and a half hours. Cut down on road travel and jump aboard an Air Taxi service which lands right on the Bentara River.
Introduction
Villa Red is a stylishly-designed private villa set amidst lush tropical gardens leading to the broad Bentara River. Interiors are decorated with Dutch-period antiques, plush sofas, art, and black & white photography from the owner’s private collections. Spend a tranquil day by the poolside or go jet skiing on the Bentara River. The sandy beaches of Bentota are only a short boat ride across the river. Villa Red can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests and is booked on a villa-only basis. The villa, owned by a Sri Lankan entrepreneur, is rented to one party at a time ensuring complete privacy.

Accommodation
There are four standard bedrooms and a spacious master bedroom all with a/c, overhead fans and furnished with double beds. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w rain showers.

Standard Bedrooms: These rooms are located in pairs on either side of the dining area and open to the swimming pool. The interiors follow varied themes. There is the `Boxing Room’ with photographs of boxing legend Muhammad Ali and other memorabilia; `Beatles Room’ with images of John Lennon and others posters reminiscent of the 1960s Beatles mania; `Liberation Room’ depicting the freedom struggle of the former Soviet Nation; and finally the `Vietnam Room’ displaying intriguing art from Vietnam’s revolutionary period.

Master Bedroom: This spacious bedroom is separate from the rest of the house providing more privacy and opens on to a deck overlooking the river. Interior is furnished with a king-size four poster bed. Other in-room facilities include a flat screen TV, DVD player, and ensuite bathroom with twin vanities, and h/w rain shower.
Facilities
The living area is equipped with plush sofas, flat screen TV with satellite channels, home entertainment system, a collection of books and DVDs. Meals are served in the open-sided dining area overlooking the swimming pool or on the deck by the riverside. Meals can be ordered from the in-house menu. The chef at Villa Red prepares Sri Lankan and international cuisine. Other villa facilities include a swimming pool edged by an extensive pool deck; and well kept gardens with tropical foliage. Next door is a full-equipped marina and boat house offering numerous watersports including boat rides, river cruises, kayaking, jet skiing, wind surfing, and banana boating.
Excursions
Take a boat ride along the tranquil Bentara River past rural villages. En route, visit the local markets and village temples. The river is edged by mangroves and foliage that attracts numerous species of birds. Go across the river to the beach where hours can be spent taking in the sun. Swimming and surfing in the Indian Ocean waters on the West Coast is possible during the season from December to April. Experience Ambalangoda’s cultural heritage with a visit to the Ariyapala Mask Museum where intricate masks used in various southern traditional dance forms are on display. Masked dancing is also performed here regularly. We also recommend a visit to Lunuganga –a garden retreat that was created by Geoffrey Bawa. The Lunuganga gardens were a life long project cherished by Bawa and designed with numerous varieties of foliage, many pavilions, and statues. Visit Galle’s 17C Dutch Fort, a UNESCO world heritage site with a maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings still in use, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, and a growing collection of boutique hotels, art galleries, shops, cafes and restaurants.
