The Sri Lanka Travel Specialists
Stay in a wooden tree house with cadjan thatched roof built around an old tamarind tree, or the simple open-plan cottage with thatched roof at the edge of a small man-made lake. Rustic-chic best describes the interiors, which are decorated with colourful furnishings. Wildlife enthusiasts can rise early and head to Wilpattu National Park, whilst others may prefer to relax in the peaceful wilderness surroundings. Indulge in traditional rice and curry cooked in clay pots over a hearth and enjoy the magical setting created by hurricane lamps at nightfall. As this remains a remote area, there is no electricity. For lighting bulbs, running pedestal fans and hot water showers, Cadjan Earth relies on solar power backed by a generator which is turned on for a few hours in the night. Cadjan Earth can be booked by two parties at one time on a FB basis.
Accommodation is in the upper floor of the Tree House and the single-storey Lake House, situated a short two minute stroll away. The Lake House offers greater privacy. There are no doors and windows in the houses, allowing for uninterrupted views and a cool breeze.
Lake House: A spacious hall and veranda that serve as sleeping and living areas with views of the lake. On either side are two bathrooms – one with a washbasin and w/c and the other with h/w shower and built-in cement bath tub. The house is designed with mud walls, polished cement flooring and cadjan thatched roof. Interiors are furnished with two double beds fitted with mosquito netting, dining table on the veranda and plenty of planters’ chairs. Sleeps up to four guests.
Tree House: The upper floor of the Tree House has one double room that leads to another twin bedroom and a small balcony. The four guests in the Tree House share two outdoor bathrooms, located downstairs by the dining area. One of these bathrooms has a washbasin, w/c and h/w shower and the other has a washbasin and w/c. Bedrooms are accessed via a timber and rope ladder which is not recommended for young children or those with mobility difficulties. The bedrooms are at the level of the tree canopy, ideal for spotting birds.
Meals are served in the ground floor dining area of the Tree House or on the Lake House veranda. Traditional Sri Lankan cuisine is prepared with fresh village vegetables and seafood brought in from the nearby coastal town of Kalpitiya. A few western dishes, BBQs, snacks, fresh fruit juices, leaf congee, Ceylon tea and coffee are also on offer. Guests can bring their own alcohol. Discuss your meal preferences ahead of time and the cook will prepare the meals to your liking. She is also happy to share her traditional Sri Lankan recipes with guests. There are bicycles for exploring the estate and the surrounding villages, books and an easel. The estate is cultivated with vegetables and fruit trees and there are a few resident ducks, chickens, rabbits, dogs and mongoose. Cadjan Earth is staffed with a cook and housekeeper.
Cadjan Earth is a rustic eco-retreat set on a 100-acre private estate in the remote village of Anamaduwa in the north-west district of Puttalam. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take approximately two hours.
