Ravana’s Secret is a simple guesthouse set on the 100 acre Pearl Bank Estate high in the hills of Ella in the southern highlands. Turn off from the main Ella to Wellawaya road and wind your way uphill for about 30 minutes to the remote Ravana Ella cliff top – an area of immense beauty. Situated about 3,000 ft above sea level, this is point at which the Ravana waterfall begins to cascade down hill. Ravana’s Secret can be accessed via Nuwara Eliya or travelling from the south via Wellawaya. The roadway to the estate is rustic and winding and is best attempted in a van or a jeep.
Introduction
Ravana’s Secret is owned by a British couple who live on the property and provides home-cooked meals and a personalised service. Accommodation is in five self-contained apartments equipped with basic requirements. There is much to do on this fruit and vegetable estate including bird and butterfly watching, trekking, mountain climbing, organic farming, vegetable and coffee picking, and even cheese making. Ravana’s Secret is a work in progress with plans for future expansion with the greatest respect for nature. The property has an unusual, but equally picturesque side view of Ella Gap.

Accommodation
There are three cottages – White House, Heart Lodge, and Club Cottage which are situated well away from each other providing much privacy. White House and Heart Lodge consist of two self-contained apartments each and the Club Cottage has one. The apartments are spacious and have a sitting area with a fire place opening on to a private balcony with garden or mountain views, bedroom, dressing room, and ensuite bathroom with h/w shower. Interiors have twin or double antique style four-poster beds fitted with mosquito netting. Table fans are available upon request. Airconditioning is not required since the climate is cool and comfortable in this region. Each apartment can sleep two guests and is rented on a half-board basis.

White House: Situated closer to the main entrance to the property, the White House has two apartments on the same floor with a shared central dining area where meals are served for all the guests.

Heart Lodge: The two-storey Heart Lodge has one apartment on the ground floor and the other on the first floor opening on to private balconies with spectacular side views of the Ella Gap. The second floor of this cottage is being developed as the main restaurant.

Club Cottage: There is one spacious apartment in the Club Cottage opening on to a balcony with mountain views.
Facilities
Sri Lankan and western food is on offer prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables from the estate. Western meals are cooked by the owner himself. He also makes cheese and is happy to share the experience with guests. Meals are served at the White House dining room. There is a small office where internet and telephone facilities are available. Ravana’s Secret offers guided treks and birding trails.
Excursions
There are three waterfalls within the estate which is believed to be the beginnings of the main Ravana Ella waterfall. Go trekking and discover remote caves, rock pools and mountain peaks. Get involved with the nature conservation programmes being done by the owners including reforestation. Visit the ancient Dova Temple, Ravana caves and Ravana falls associated with the epic Ramayana tales.
