Comilla is a refurbished planter’s bungalow in a vast coconut estate in Wathurugama, an hour north-east of Colombo’s international airport, and a potential first or last stop on an island tour. Gampaha is enroute to Kandy and the Cultural Triangle.
Introduction
Originally known as `Camillia’, this estate bungalow was built by a British planter in 1876. The property is now owned by a Sri Lankan family who has refurbished the old bungalow with much care retaining its original features. Interiors possess all modern conveniences. Comilla has only two spacious suites and a separate self-contained lodge that can be rented by the room on a BB basis. The main bungalow stands under the shade of a century old lychee tree which is frequented by numerous species of birds.

Accommodation
There are two suites named Stork Studio and Knox Studio; and a separate chalet known as the Silva Lodge. All rooms have a/c and open on to a verandah with garden views.

Stork & Knox Studios: These two suites consist of a living area, bedroom with king-size bed, an additional day bed that can accommodate a third guest and writing table; dressing room, private dining facilities, and well-designed ensuite bathrooms which open to the sky h/w shower. Other in-room facilities includes a mini-bar, tea /coffee facility, safety locker, hair dryer, bath robes and pool towels.

Silva Lodge: This is a self-contained lodge which is located separately from the main bungalow and is ideal for a family or even a romantic getaway. The Silva Lodge has living and dining areas, bedroom with a king-size bed, and pantry equipped with a microwave, fridge, crockery and cutlery. The Silva Lodge opens on to two decks overlooking the garden where private candlelit dinners are served.
Facilities
There is a lounge, TV room, dining area and a juice bar. Sri Lankan and western cuisine is served in the dining room, pool deck, or in the privacy of your own room. Guests are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages. Other facilities include a selection of books and DVDs, board games, butler-on-call, room service and laundry service, swimming pool, bicycles for guests to use, and sprawling gardens scattered with coffee, pepper, coconut, fruits and a rare variety of trees that attracts many birds. With prior notice, Comilla will organise guided meditation sessions.
Excursions
Go bird watching, hiking or explore Comilla estate on bicycle. Visit the ancient Varana rock temple. The temple has rock inscriptions, caves, and boulders with drip ledges that stand out through the wilderness. About seven kilometers away is the Pillikuthtuwa temple which is also an interesting ancient temple with caves and stone inscriptions.
