Fortaleza Church Cross Street is a small, laid-back boutique hotel with gastro café which adds to the attractions of Galle Fort. This four-bedroom boutique hotel and restaurant is housed in a Dutch period building originally owned by a merchant who used it as a spice warehouse. The building has been caringly refurbished, retaining high roofs and some of original one-foot thick Kabok walls. A magnificent sculpture by Sri Lankan artist Laki Senanayake stands tall at a mezzanine level in the lounge area. A winding wooden staircase takes you up to cozy bedrooms with hardwood floors and bay windows. Interiors have handmade hardwood furniture, luxurious soft furnishings, art and sculptures. The charming verandah restaurant and living area is set within the same premises. Children below 12 years are not accommodated at Fortaleza’s hotel due to the heights and steep staircase, but are welcome to dine at the restaurant.
Bedrooms have timber floors and ceilings, a/c, overhead fans, and ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers.
Master Bedroom: Located on the Mezzanine floor, the Master Bedroom is spacious and has king-size four poster bed; day bed; writing desk, couch and planter’s chair.
Library Room: Also located on the Mezzanine floor, the Library Room has more of the original architectural features including a large circular window at a high level and bay window that makes the room light and airy. King-size four-poster bed and writing desk.
Turquoise Rooms: These two smaller rooms are on the ground floor. While one room has a queen-size bed, the other has twin beds.
Relaxing and dining is in an attractive and informal area by a central courtyard. As well as the gastro café menu, chilled beer and wine is served at the courtyard bar. The Galle Fort Spa, run by Fortaleza Church Cross Street, is next door.
Fortaleza Church Cross Street lies at the corner of Church Cross Street and Lighthouse Street in Galle Fort. The beaches of Unawatuna and Thalpe are about 15 minutes away. The journey from Colombo’s international airport will take about 2.5 hours via the Southern highway. If you are then heading from the coast into the hills, we offer competitive rates on a daily sea plane between Koggala and Hatton.
