`Ulpotha was and still is like the epicenter of this land that time forgot, or T. S. Eliot’s `still point of the turning world.’ Situated within striking distance of the primary ancient sites of the island….the retreat is cradled in the lap of seven sacred hills. Once mistaken by wondering monks as the seven hills of Kataragama, the most sacred pilgrimage site on the island, the area is still populated by local shamans and ascetic hermits. Locals and guests at Ulpotha all mingle harmoniously within this landscape, wondering barefoot through the mud-hut village, along the sandy paths bordered by palms and paddyfields…..This is not an ascetic ashram environment, however. ….. That is the real magic of Ulpotha – the creation of a space that captures the balance between a sybaritic lotus-eating paradise and a restorative sanctuary from the modern world, from which you cannot fail to leave in better shape, physically, mentally and spiritually, than when you arrived.’
Harpers Magazine, Hip & Hot – The Insider’s Guide to the Best Chill-out Spots , Jun 2004
'Guests, who come for a minimum of two weeks, sleep in wattle-and-daub huts without electricity and eat traditionally prepared food. There are excellent teachers for those who are attracted to yoga, but there is no pressure to join classes. Guests range from burnt-out City execs to partied-out Notting Hill trustafarians to writers seeking solace, but all share a desire for more holistic pursuits than simply frying themselves on a beach. Although, after a few days of relaxing in such harmonious surroundings, evenings invariably end in spontaneous party mode.'
Tricia Willis, Travel Sri Lanka, Vol 3 No 1
'The retreat is maintained as a traditional working village, providing a rare opportunity for guests to experience Sri Lankan life in its most natural form. There is a strong emphasis on farming highly nutritious traditional strains of rice and at harvesting time it is possible to witness the villagers ushering the buffalo in circles to tread the grains from the crops, with the sounds of traditional chanting heard late into the night. Such a unique oasis, veiled in a setting so far away from the stresses and strains of everyday life, is the perfect place to stop and take stock. One guest acknowledged quite rightly that Ulpotha is `a place to disappear and reappear'
Rory Spowers, National Geographic Traveller
'Is this the purest form of eco-tourism in the world?.....Although the sanctuary is open for groups to pursue yoga, meditation or other courses given by teachers of holistic therapies, individuals are also welcome to come of their own accord. The luxuriant growth of and diversity of plant life within the confines of Ulpotha combined with the sheer tranquillity to make it a unique and healing experience just to be there'

Mar 04, 2008 : Amazing place, run by incredible people. A stunning setting. The best food I had in my entire trip. Two weeks there and I felt totally rejuvenated by the yoga, Ayurveda, food, water, lake and general vibe. Can’t say enough good things about the place and will recommend it to all my stressed out friends – even those who have never done yoga. A very special place!!
