'…Bags of colonial character, wooden floorboards and ceilings, some period furniture and fittings, beautifully situated in secluded parkland with lots of monkeys. Downstairs a bit dark so inspect first – but slight grubbiness seems to add to charm. Restaurant, bike hire, guests can use pool at Nuwarawewa Rest House, reasonable value, closest to archeological sites.'

'A Raj-era relic with a style all its own, the century old Tissawewa is authentic right down to the shower railings and claw-foot bathtubs. Besides high – celinged lounge areas and verandas, it has 4.4 hectares of gardens with mahogany and teak trees. A big veranda looks out on gardens with lots of monkeys who have no qualms about stealing your afternoon tea…..Even if you are not staying here, it’s a good place to come for lunch.'
