Location
The Starlight Hotel lies only a mile away from the famed Unawatuna Bay. Big-chain hotels have thankfully spared this stretch of the south coast and Unawatuna and nearby bays are home to a scattering of small guesthouses, seafood restaurants and lively beach bars. The historic city of Galle is just 10 minutes away. The journey from Colombo's International Airport will take around four-and-a-half hours.
Introduction
Star Light's 14 rooms offer modern comforts at an appealing price. Such excellent value is explained by the hotel's lack of its own sandy beach - a short path from the hotel leads to a small rocky cove from where stilt fishermen seek their daily catch. But it has a fair-sized pool in a private back garden and Unawatuna's beautiful sandy beach is only a mile away, so some will regard the minor inconvenience as more than compensated for elsewhere. An option particularly worth considering for value-conscious cricket tourists heading for Galle and Matara.

Excursions
For those interested in surfing and watersports, the beaches of Unawatuna and Mirissa are ideal. Water sports on offer include sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkeling and boating. Koggala Lake, with its many tiny islands inhabited with several species of birds, is another wonderful experience. We recommend a visit to the historic 17th century Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow streets lined with Dutch and British colonial era buildings which are still in use, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the lighthouse, and a growing collection of art galleries, cafes and restaurants.
