Koggala Lake, scattered with 16 small islands, is a peaceful setting where rural life unfolds. Fish eagles to monitor lizards share this habitat along with generations of southern villagers. Koggala was the home of Sri Lanka’s famous author, Martin Wickramasinghe, whose books about life in Koggala and Madolduwa are still studied by schoolchildren island wide. South Point Cottage, set just at the edge of the lake is an ideal spot from which to experience this wonderful rural life. Tranquil and inspiring surroundings, comfortable rooms and caring staff make this an ideal retreat for nature lovers, fishermen, writers and artists. Up to six adults can be accommodated, children are most welcome and a cot is available upon request. Rental is on a villa-only basis. Staff can shop and cook.
Accommodation
South Point Cottage has two double bedrooms downstairs and a master suite upstairs all with a/c and overhead ceiling fans. The beds are fitted with mosquito netting.
Master suite: Located on the upper floor, this is a spacious suite furnished with an n antique four-poster bed, work desk and lounging furniture. Large windows open out to a balcony with views of the lake. The ensuite bathroom has double washbasins, h/w rain shower, and w/c. Other facilities include TV, DVD player and music system.
Ground Floor Bedrooms: Two double rooms are furnished with twin beds that can be put together. Attached bathrooms have h/w rain showers, wash basin, and w/c. One bedroom opens out to the front verandah and the lake beyond while the other has garden and lake views. One of the rooms has a connecting door to the Main suite upstairs.
Facilities
The ground floor verandha skirts around the house and has relaxing views over the lake. The dining area has a six-seater table and lies near a triangular swimming pool. A spacious well-equipped kitchen is available for those wishing to do their own cooking or, if preferred, the in-house chef can prepare Sri Lankan and Western dishes. Fresh lagoon crabs, prawns and fish can be purchased right at the doorstep from fisherman as their boats glide past. Other staff at South Point Cottage includes a housekeeper and nightwatchman. Upali, who also managers the sister properties, can also assist guests.
Excursions
Some of the more interesting islands on Koggala Lake include Fish Eagle Island where many eagles come to nest at dusk; Madolduwa, which has remains of Martin Wickramasinghe original home; and Cinnamon Island where four village families process cinnamon into essential oils. South Point Cottage has its own boat as well as safety vests, life jackets, and fishing rods for guests' use. Paddle boats, local canoes (oru) and kayaks are also available and stillt-fishing and trolling on the lake is possible. Stop by at the nearby Buddhist temple where ceremonies are held daily and become a hive of activity especially on a full-moon Poya day. Visit the Koggala Folk Museum that provides an insight into Sri Lankan Folk culture. Galle’s historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 15 minutes away. Hours can be spent walking the ramparts and exploring the narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings and a swelling number of art galleries, antique shops and cafes. Watersports are possible on the beautiful, sandy south coast.
