The Royal Lotus Hotel is elevated slightly above the Giritale Reservoir, providing wonderful views from a truly beautiful setting. Located near to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the hotel is within easy reach of the entire cultural triangle and Wilpattu and Minneriya National Parks. Colombo takes around 4 hours by car, Dambulla 1.5 hours.
Introduction
The exterior of the Royal Lotus might not smack of a modern luxury hotel but from the minute you walk into reception it has a mellow, elegant style. Using modern design hinted with historical and cultural references this hotel, fully refurbished in 2005, offers chilled-out luxury. The lobby is spacious and stylish, with comfortable armchairs looking over the stunning Giritale Reservoir; arm yourself with a drink from the Juice Bar Cafe. Through huge glass windows is a minimalist pool area, with good-sized pool, large deckchair space and outdoor restaurant. The rooms at the Royal Lotus have contemporary furnishings, with subtle pastel shades and a slight eastern influence.

Accommodation
The Royal Lotus has 54 aircontioned, en-suite rooms including Standard Rooms, Deluxe Rooms (located on the top floor with wonderful views), four individual chalets, and two Suites. The rooms are spread over three-floors and have balconies offering exceptional views. In-room facilities include comfortable twin or double beds, satellite TV, IDD telephone and ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers. The Deluxe Rooms, individual chalets and Suites are more spacious and also have a minibar. Standard rooms are twin and an extra bed can be requested to make it a triple.
Facilities
Good-sized swimming pool with striking view over Giritale lake, indoor and outdoor restaurants sharing a somewhat restricted menu, two bars, a juice bar-cafe, laundry, 24-hour room service, Doctor on call, and an Ayurvedic centre providing relaxing therapies. It also offers the use of the Angsana spa located at the Deer Park Hotel next door. The décor in the indoor restaurant does not match the high yardstick set by the rest of the hotel, but the a/c bar, in contrast, is a most appealing room.
Excursions
The Royal Lotus is particularly well placed for the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Nature walks, bird watching and wildlife trails available nearby and will be arranged by the in-house Mahout Adventure Club and guests will be accompanied on their nature hikes by the hotel's Naturalist. The surrounding area is home to over 120 species of birds as well as monkeys, deer, and elephants. Explore the Minneriya National Park where it is possible to see herds of upto 150 elephants feeding and bathing at the ancient tank that dominates the park.
