Lonely planet , Jan 2009
'Quick! Try and find a spare space on the walls. Interesting reminders of lives of the extremely well-lived decorate the interior of this quirky boutique hotel. That includes stags’ heads, out-of-control candles and Gaudiesque one-off pieces of art. It’s a deeply eccentric place that resonates with history; a roll call of celebs stayed here post WWII. Now the colourful Helga De Silva presides over the hotel, and each room is imbued with her individual touch. Don’t expect a five-star stay, but look forward to an atmosphere that’s unique and memorable.'
Gavin Thomas' Rough Guide t Sri Lanka , Nov 2006
'Utterly maverick and magical place, set high above Kandy in the palatial former home of Sri Lankan independence here George E. de Silva – former house guests have included Gandhi,, Nehru, and Laurence Oliver. The extraordinary interiors is a riot of colourful invention, with each room decorated in a different theme and colour, from the eye-popping yellow lounge, with petrified dripping candles, deer heads, Indonesian puppets and colonial photos, to the individual bedrooms each with a unique design featuring any combination of wacky murals, colonial furniture and unusual objects d’art…'
Edward Aves, Footprint Sri Lanka, Fourth Edition
'Eccentrically designed `anti-hotel’ full of character and quirkiness, uniqueness of interior and exterior design (`the Savador Dali of hotels’) has to be seen to be believed, set in quite wooded hills…'
Channa Daswatte, Sri Lanka Style – Tropical Design and Architecture, 2006, pp110
'Each bedroom has been stamped with is own individuality on the whim and fancy of the owner, the objects used and the quality of light and views available. The interconnecting spaces and bathrooms go their own way with one bathroom painted as an aquarium and another entirely plastered with pages from magazines of yesteryear. The whole house brims with an enjoyment of every aspect of life, where each object is valued not for its monetary cost, but by the sheer pleasure it gives the owner and her guests.'
Customer Feedback
Feb 12, 2011 : Chosen by us on recommendation. Helga’s Folly is very interesting and serves great lunch and dinner. However, the hotel on the whole is very tired and not particularly clean. Would only recommend for a meal, not to stay.

Mar 15, 2008 : Utterly unique experience. Wouldn’t have missed it. However, wonderful public areas are let down by the bed room accommodation. Bed room was rather small and inadequate (Eg: very low water pressure, showering difficult, water never more than warm at best). All hotel public areas were fascinating and Helga was charming. All staff were excellent and helpful.

Feb 26, 2007 : A truly unique hotel, very good food and excellent service. The only downside is that the place is looking a little tired in places.
