Colombo has always been one of the most unsung capitals in south
and south-east Asia, but this compact and easily-explored city
is in its most optimistic mood for decades, and should no longer
be dismissed lightly.
It might not possess the large, soulless shopping malls of Kuala
Lumpur, but bargain seekers can still find an attractive range
of clothing, handicrafts and jewellery in attractive surroundings.
Its nightlife might not rival the brashness of Bangkok, but
it has a sprinkling of excellent restaurants and intimate bars
to while the night away. And, as well as the arrival of a boutique
hotel or three, in what other capital city can you still find
a five-star hotel for around £40 a night?
