Kandy’s proud heritage and splendid lakeside setting has long made it a favourite haunt for Sri Lanka travellers.

This bustling hill-country capital is the natural gateway to a lush central region of tea plantations, gurgling streams and stirring history.

It is never busier than during the annual Perahera, a fortnight’s festival in late July and August, when the town is enlivened by parading elephants, acrobats, drummers and dancers. This is one of the finest festivals in Asia and hotel space is limited months in advance.

Amaya Hills (formerly known as Le Kandyan Hotel)
Amaya Hills (formerly known as Le Kandyan Hotel) is a 4-star hotel lying on a tranquil, wooded outcrop above the hill-country capital of Kandy. Its panoramic views delight many, but we also value its authentic Sri Lankan feel.

Castle Hill Guest House, Kandy
Castle Hill Guest House has barely changed in 30 years -- a lick of paint here, a small repair or update there – and the result has been a much-loved family home where time drips backwards to a simpler, less demanding era. That reputation has made it one of our most requested budget properties. However, recent feedback has been critical of standards of cleanliness and we have downgraded our opinion as a result.

Chaaya Citadel, Kandy
Chaaya Citadel Hotel has prime position on the banks of the Mahaweli river. Although it is slightly overshadowed by the leading four-stars, it is a satisfying middle-range hotel for the package trade, with airy lounge and bar areas, an a la carte restaurant and its own jetty for river boat trips.

Earls Regency Hotel, Kandy
The Earls Regency, lying alongside the broad Maheweli River, offers modern and spacious four-star comfort on Kandy’s outskirts. This well-appointed hotel strives for a sense of grandeur but some find it lacking in atmosphere. The most conveniently-situated hotel for Victoria golf club.

Ellerton – Kandy

Ellerton is an exciting discovery: a splendid hill-county property blessed with magnificent hill-country views. The 100-year-old planters' bungalow recently refurbished by its British owners, sits amid a nine-acre organic tea and spice estate in Gampola, about half an hour from Kandy, just off the Nuwara Eliya road, it is a perfect stopping off point en route to Nuwara Eliya, or serves as an ideal hill-country location in itself.

Hantane Shadow Resort, Kandy
The Hantane Shadow Resort is a new hotel situated at the edge of a forest reserve in Hantane on the outskirts of Kandy. Surrounded by Sri Lanka’s tropical wilderness, fauna and flora, birds and butterflies, the Hantane Shadow Resort is an attractive spot for those wanting solitude and tranquility along with comfortable accommodation and the experience of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. Although the ensuite bedrooms lack character, they are clean and pleasantly furnished; with a number of the rooms having balconies from which you can enjoy the hullabaloo of the jungle. The small swimming pool is a great place to soak while gazing into the foliage above and the roof terrace is a popular location from which to enjoy a good book amidst a tropical setting. Hantane Shadow Resort is not a sumptuous, all-embracing eco-resort, but at this price it is a good selection for those on a mid-range budget.

Helga's Folly, Kandy
Helga's Folly, in Kandy, is the biggest of our boutique selection. Its rooms are simple but its bohemian public areas are adored by those with an artistic bent. An enchanting high-camp hotel decorated by antiques, family heirlooms and flights of fancy.

Hunas Falls Hotel, nr Kandy
A hotel with solid traditions that would not be out of place in western Scotland. This peaceful mountain retreat sits in a land of early-morning mists, long walks in relative cool of the hill country and fascinating sunsets.

Kandy House, Kandy
The Kandy House is what the hill-country-capital has been waiting for so long: a brilliant small boutique hotel capable of offering stylish and private accommodation, personal service

Mahaweli Reach, Kandy
An intriguing mix of aristocratic Kandyan and colonial gives Mahawelli Reach a certain cachet: sumptious, refined yet not too stuffy. Its public areas are spotless, its buffets arguably the finest in town and a huge outdoor pool licks alongside the the tasteful terraced restaurant.

Manor House, Kandy
Manor House is a Kandy heritage property of 14 rooms, originally built in 1884 and now fully refurbished. Once the home of the Nugawala family – the chief custodians at one time, of the sacred tooth relic in the Temple of the Tooth -- the Manor House is an extensive property with a large, well-kept garden and swimming pool.

Painted Garden, Kandy
Art lovers will be particularly entranced by Painted Garden. Set on the breezy slopes of the majestic Hantana mountains, the house has elevated lawns and spectacular views.

Randholee, Kandy
Randholee translates as afavoured means of transport for royalty during the period of the Kandyan kingdom. Royalty would have settled for this setting. The 25-room hotel, completed in 2007, lies in tranquil, wooded surroundings, 15 minutes drive above the hill-country capital of Kandy, and is blessed with a panoramic view of the city and its surrounding hills.

Rangala House, Kandy
Rangala House is a converted tea estate bungalow in the Knuckles range of mountains. This comfortable house has a homely feel and is in tune with its rural and pristine natural surroundings. The house is overlooked by the majestic Knuckles Range at the back and at the front are the luminous, tea-covered hills of the Dukwari Estate. Rangala House is ideal for those wanting to relax amid the natural splendour of the hill country.

Sharon Inn, Kandy
Sharon Inn is a delightful guesthouse on the hillside overlooking Sri Lanka’s hill country capital, Kandy. This property is spotlessly clean, comfortable and well run by the Sri Lankan and German owners. Good food and a relaxed atmosphere make this a great guesthouse option in the town.

Suisse Hotel, Kandy
For those seeking a sense of old colonial, Suisse Hotel fits the bill. Dark wooden panelling and floors predominate in a traditional hotel that slows your step and transports you back in time. A central position, a few yards from Kandy lake, adds to its appeal, but do not expect the height of modern comforts.

Swiss Residence, Kandy
The Swiss Residence, a Sri Lankan hotel with a Swiss touch, is a hospitable, mid-range Kandy hotel situated in a peaceful and verdant cliffside location high above the hubbub of the town centre. Kandy';s hotels promote a relaxed and peaceful atmopshere, but the Swiss residencde is comparatively lively and even has its own nightclub.

Thilanka Hotel, Kandy
Hotel Thilanka sits in the foothills of Udawattakelle nature reserve, with most rooms offering a picturesque view of Kandy lake. This 3-star hotel began life as a private house, built by a wealthy Kandyan towards the end of the colonial era. It has since been extended by a six-storey new wing.

Topaz Hotel, Kandy
The Topaz has always boasted captivating views across Kandy. Now this modest, mid-range hotel has improved restaurant and bar areas and will appeal to those seeking traditional hotel accommodation at inviting value.

Tree of Life, Kandy
The Tree of Life sprawls across 64 acres of woody, hilly terrain, a haven of solitude where guests prefer dawn nature walks to noisier pleasures. An individualistic hotel with ayurvedic philosophy at its heart.

Tulip of Ceylon, Mawanella
Tulip of Ceylon is a small and individualistic eco retreat, 6kms off the Colombo-Kandy road, and close to Pinnewela Elephant Orphanage. This immensely tranquil setting, on a hillock overlooking the Ma Oya river, will be prized by those seeking reasonable comforts, good food, peaceful rural surroundings and a sparkling swimming pool among the tropical foliage.

Villa Rosa, Kandy
Villa Rosa is a tasteful six-room property, five minutes from Kandy town, with stunning views high above the broad Mahaweli River. Rooms are comfortable, tastefully furnished and with a sense of privacy for such a small hotel. Public areas are tranquil, with a small library, classical music in the background and dinner by candelight.

Enison Lodge, Victoria Golf & Country Club
This golfing lodge is located amidst the central highlands in the beautiful Victoria Golf and Country Club, one of Asia’s most beautiful golf courses. Subashri, Kandy
Victoria Golf and Country Resort has been praised as one of Asia’s finest and Subashri offers high-class boutique accommodation right alongside the course. Four exquisitely-furnished suites in contemporary colinial style, with spectacular views of the Knuckles range, ensure that golf and other outdoor pursuits can be enjoyed in luxury.
