Kandy’s proud heritage and splendid lakeside setting has
long made it a favourite haunt for Sri Lanka travellers.
This bustling hill-country capital is the natural gateway to
a lush central region of tea plantations, gurgling streams and
stirring history.
It is never busier than during the annual Perahera, a fortnight’s
festival in late July and August, when the town is enlivened
by parading elephants, acrobats, drummers and dancers. This
is one of the finest festivals in Asia and hotel space is limited
months in advance.

Sri Lankan feel. |

| Castle
Hill Guest House, Kandy |
|
 |
Castle
Hill Guest House has barely changed in 30 years
-- a lick of paint here, a small repair or update
there – and the result has been a much-loved
family home where time drips backwards to a simpler,
less demanding era. That reputation has made it
one of our most requested budget properties. However,
recent feedback has been critical of standards of
cleanliness and we have downgraded our opinion as
a result. |

|
 |

| Hantane
Shadow Resort, Kandy |
|
 |
The
Hantane Shadow Resort is a new hotel situated at
the edge of a forest reserve in Hantane on the outskirts
of Kandy. Surrounded by Sri Lanka’s tropical
wilderness, fauna and flora, birds and butterflies,
the Hantane Shadow Resort is an attractive spot
for those wanting solitude and tranquility along
with comfortable accommodation and the experience
of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. Although
the ensuite bedrooms lack character, they are clean
and pleasantly furnished; with a number of the rooms
having balconies from which you can enjoy the hullabaloo
of the jungle. The small swimming pool is a great
place to soak while gazing into the foliage above
and the roof terrace is a popular location from
which to enjoy a good book amidst a tropical setting.
Hantane Shadow Resort is not a sumptuous, all-embracing
eco-resort, but at this price it is a good selection
for those on a mid-range budget. |

For
those seeking a sense of old colonial, Suisse Hotel
fits the bill. Dark wooden panelling and floors
predominate in a traditional hotel that slows your
step and transports you back in time. A central
position, a few yards from Kandy lake, adds to its
appeal, but do not expect the height of modern comforts.
