Negombo is an unapologetically youthful and western-influenced
beach town. It might lack the range of hotels that the west
coast can offer, or the escapist splendour of the coves deep
in the south, but for a convenient, value-for-money tropical
holiday, it has much in its favour.
This is a relaxed and sociable environment where holidaymakers
and Sri Lankans haggle over this and that, flock to the numerous
bars and restaurants, loll on a mile-long strip of broad, sandy
tropical beach and generally mingle to an extent rarely matched
in other resorts.

| Blue
Oceanic, Negombo |
|
 |
The
Blue Oceanic, with its Mediterranean feel, is a
well-managed mid-range property in a youthful resort.
It gazes out onto the best section of Negombo beach

this section of the coast. |

| Browns
Beach, Negombo |
|
 |
Browns
Beach, established in 1970, was one of the first
hotels to be established in Negombo. Beach space
was no problem then, which allowed Browns the extravagance
of idling over a 450-metre stretch of prime sandy
coastline. Excellent new management has shaken Browns
out of years of torpor and its welcoming atmosphere
and recent smartening-up has upped its appeal for
the mid-market package holiday crowd. |

| Club
Hotel Dolphin, Waikkal |
|
 |
Club
Hotel Dolphin lies in Waikkal fishing village, 30
minutes north of the international airport. It lacks
a sandy beach, but the swimming pool is outstanding
and rooms comparable to Colombo five-stars. A convenient
spot to begin or end your Sri Lanka holiday. |

|
| |
| Club
Palm Bay Hotel, Marawila |
|
 |
One
hour north of the airport, Club Palm Bay stands
between a mangrove lagoon and the Indian Ocean.
It has a private unspoilt beach – with that
rare thing in Sri Lanka: hotel sun loungers on the
beach -- a gigantic swimming pool and a wide range
of watesports. Best for those who prefer a full-board
deal in a traditional hotel of 4-star standard.

| |
| Horathapola,
Kanadanagedara |
|
 |
Horathapola
made us cry with delight when we first set eyes
on it. It is a renovated planters’s house,
only 45 minutes north-east of the airport, hidden
in an undiscovered rural setting, a resting point
perhaps en route to Kandy or the ruined cities. |

|
| |
| Ice
Bear, Negombo |
|
 |
The
Ice Bear is the most endearing guesthouse in this
buzzy north-west coast resort: welcoming, artistic,
and ever so eccentric. The imaginative budget traveler
will love its sense of difference and little antique
flourishes. |

|
The Mudhouse, Puttalam |
|
 |
The
Mudhouse is a secluded eco retreat nestled at the
foot of the ancient Parmakanda Rock temple in the
North West district of Puttalam.
Set amidst six acres of untouched wilderness, tranquil
lakes and abundant fauna and flora, a stay at the
Mudhouse is truly an experience of Sri Lanka's natural
beauty within a typical rural setting. The Mudhouse
is a two-hour drive north from Colombo, close to
the town of Anamaduwa and is en-route to the 'Cultural
Triangle' sites of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla,
Sigiriya and Wilpattu National Park. |

| |
| Olenka
Sunside Beach Hotel |
|
 |
Olenka
Sunside Beach Hotel lies on the broad and largely-deserted
sandy beach of Marawila, which might be regarded
as the northern outpost of the "Negombo coast,"
a much quieter development about 15 miles further
north. As a beach hotel, it will appeal only to
those seeking a restful location at a budget price.
But it is also a simple but convenient budget base
for those heading to Wilpattu national park and
the ruined city of Anuradhapura. |

|
| |
| Paradise Holiday Village, Negombo |
|
 |
Negombo
is predominantly youthful and western-influenced
and Rani’s Holiday Village catches the mood.
You will not find much Sri Lanka culture here, but
if modern facilities, a communal vibe and a sandy
beach 100m away appeal, then Rani’s fits the
bill. |
|
|
| |
| Ranweli Holiday Village, Waikkal |
|
 |
Ranweli
works hard to provide a gentle introduction to the
eco experience. This mid-range hotel lies on a coastal
estuary, about 10 miles north of Negombo. An isolated
hotel reached by a short paddle-ferry trip. |
|
|
| |
| Tamarind
Tree, Katunayake |
|
 |
There
can be few more peaceful hotels so close to an international
airport than this. The Tamarind Tree is only five
minutes' drive from the Bandaranaike International
Airport, yet nestled in a tranquil and sprawling
coconut grove, it might be in another world. It
also is conveniently positioned for the value-for-money
beach resort of Negombo, which lies only a few miles
north. |
