The gateway to the south is the historic town of Galle. Do not forego the historic Fort area, which has become a haven for craft shops, museums, art galleries and which houses a select collection of wonderfully renovated hotels and villas.

Galle town and the south coast took a battering during the Boxing Day tsunami, yet this idyllic stretch of coastline, studded with sandy coves, is determinedly fighting back.

Accommodation choices tend to be more intimate here – luxury villas vie for attention with independent cabana-style properties. True tranquillity.

Aditya, Rathgama
Aditya, a 12-suite hotel completed in early 2006, is bound to become a must-have property in the increasingly impressive boutique market. It sits on a secluded stretch of beach in Rathgama, midway between the hedonistic beach resort of Hikkaduwa and the historic old town of Galle, and oozes class and style. A triumph.

Amanwella, Tangalle
Amanwella is set amidst a mature coconut grove fronting a crescent shaped beach near the village of Tangalle, an beautiful stretch of coastline untouched by developement on the southern tip of the island. The beachfront resort has 30 stylish contemporary suites, each with their own private pool and sun-lounging terrace. A super-luxurious and chic escape developed and managed by the exclusive Aman Group, it is already recognised as Sri Lanka’s leading beach property despite opening in 2005.

Barberyn Ayurveda Resort, Weligama
Designed by local architect, Renton Wickramasinghe, Barberyn’s saffron-coloured buildings rise just above the tree canopies providing picturesque views of the Indian Ocean from every bedroom. The surrounding gardens are designed by the famous landscape artist, Laki Senanayake. Ponds, waterways, and pathways have been created through tropical jungle leading to the sandy beaches. A Sri Lankan family-run resort with generations of experience, Barberyn is an idyllic setting where the crashing waves of the sea merges with swaying palms and tropical jungles. The ocean breeze, sounds of birdcall, the flautist by nightfall, Yoga at the edge of the sea, and the gentle touch of Ayurvedic therapists as they soothe your worries away – a rejuvenating experience that will fill your being with renewed energy and vitality.

Beach House, Tangalle
The Beach House is situated in private gardens, with direct access to its own stretch of gleaming white sand near the small fishing village of Tangalle. This old Dutch colonial building, restored by the celebrated late Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, is regularly listed among the world’s finest villas.

Claughton House, Tangalle
Designed by Sri Lanka’s most famous architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa, this exquisite private house, with only three bedrooms, and set in five acres of landscaped coconut plantation, occupies a spectacular position on the idyllic south coast. Its popularity means that booking well ahead is essential.

Daladawatte, Matara
This newly-built villa sits elegantly amongst a scattering of coconut trees and green lawns that have been tastefully landscaped, and provide wonderful views out to sea. The large garden has a BBQ deck over looking the private beach which is protected by the coral reef making the otherwise treacherous waters safe for swimming, wading and floating. The villa cleverly bonds old world Sri Lankan living with an eccentric charm infused by its British owner and opera singer Barbara, who takes pride in her home.

Dickwella Resort, Dickwella
Dickwella Resort has a prized south-coast location, on a headland surrounded by two sandy and tranquil beaches. The tsunami inflicted heavy damage on the old Dickwella Village resort, but after a prolonged renovation programme, it has reappeared in a more upmarket guise, offering quality mid-market accommodation in individual cabanas.

Easy Beach, Ahangama

Il Camino, Tangalle
Set back a short distance from Seenimodera coastline and nestled under the shade of a cluster of coconut trees, there is a small scattering of palm-thatched cabanas, huts and hammocks, the sum total of which exudes a wonderful village-feel. Il Camino was founded by a lovely Italian woman, Manuela, who always greets her guests with open arms and a good cup of coffee.

Insight, Ahangama

Kabalana, Ahangama
Kabalana made its name as one of Sri Lanka’s finest surfing hotels, and they remain especially active in the peak surfing season from mid-October to mid-April. But this invigorating hotel has upgraded to entice a wider spread of clientele. A palm-fringed lawn leads onto to a long, sandy stretch of quiet beach.

Kadju House, Tangalle
Kadju House is a new 'tropical modern' beach house situated just outside the south coast village of Tangalle, overlooking the magnificent crescent shaped Seenimodara Bay (Sugar Bay). Designed by a young local architect, Pradeep Kodikara, this two-storey beach house is situated on a hillock overlooking the shimmering seas below. Kadju has a contemporary feel with open-plan living spaces that let in the tropical sunshine, cooling ocean breeze, and spectacular views of Seenimodara Bay.

Lagoon Paradise, Tangalle
Lagoon Paradise is spread over a 3-acre plot of fairly rocky terrain under a canopy of coconut trees which lead down to an open stretch of grassland and a lagoon. There is a range of accommodation available, basic but functional, making this a good option either for travellers who are looking to keep costs down to a minimum or those wishing to support one of the smaller tsunami-affected areas in the region.

Last House, Tangalle
The Last House, so-called because it was Geoffrey Bawa's architectural swansong, is positioned on an idyllic strip of land - lagoon on one side, beach on the other - on the outskirts of Tangalle. It has long been one of best villas in the south coast and now the owners have opened as a small boutique hotel as well, selling individual suites in the Main House and Annex. This makes the Last House attractive to couples and small groups. The beach is fabulously long - perhaps one of the best for villa sites in the island - and offers safe swimming for much of the year.

Palm Paradise Cabanas, Tangalle
Palm Paradise offers rudimentary wooden cabanas on a gorgeous stretch of beach, in an undulating palm grove, near to the south coast village of Tangalle. This deliberately rustic settlement appeals to hardened, independent travellers yearning for tranquil and natural surroundings.

Pastissade, Tangalle
Down the ragged roads of Rekawa rests the peaceful paradise of Pastissade, an understated beach house with two good bedrooms, an upstairs living area and immediate access to the sea. This is an excellent-value property which is purpose-built for unpretentious day-to-day living in a bright, breezy and beautiful spot.

Tallala Retreat, Gandara
Tallala Retreat, a new development consiting of eight two-storey villas, has a placid, almost ethereal feel, tempting the thought that Kiera Knightley or Gwynneth Paltrow might slip peacefully by at any moment. The 32-bedroom property, themed as a retreat centre offering yoga, tai chi, spa and ayurveda escapes, will delight the arty sun-worshippers among you.

The Palace, Mirissa

Ceylon Hotels Corporation has switched from government to private ownership and Tissa Resort has already benefited from several, notably the addition of a swimming pool.

Weligama Bay Resort, Weligama
