Location:
Amapola, a secluded beach house, overlooks Weligama
Bay on the southern tip of Sri Lanka, one of the most beautiful
stretches of coastline in Sri Lanka. The journey to Amapola
from the Katunayake International Airport will take approximately
five hours - or take the Air Taxi and fly to Koggala, which
is a 20-minute drive away from the villa. The historic town
of Galle is 30 minutes away. The fine beaches of Unawatuna,
Weligama and Mirissa are all nearby.
Description:
This beautiful four-bedroom villa is situated in
a large garden strewn with coconut trees, flowering frangipani
and replete with bird song. Steps at the edge of the garden
lead down to a secluded beach. This is a treasured villa that
the Colombo-based homeowners regularly escape to in order
to rest and revitalize. Being so close to their hearts, they
have created a cozy and comfortable home. Amapola is an idyllic
place where life is unhurried. Stand by the balcony’s
edge upstairs and gaze into the horizon where the sun meets
the sea – this is truly paradise. Amapola can accommodate
six adults and extra beds can be provided for children. The
villa is not recommended for families with children under
10 years of age due to an unprotected cliff at the edge of
the garden.
Accommodation:
Four large, elegantly-furnished bedrooms with garden
views or sea views. All the rooms have ensuite bathrooms with
h/w showers, sink, and w/c. The rooms are furnished with antique
four-poster beds fitted with mosquito nets. Comfortable antique
recliners in each room serve as an additional bed if required.
The rooms are cooled by overhead ceiling fans and the ocean
breeze.
Facilities:
Amapola incorporates verandahs, courtyards, high
roofs and open spaces that bring the outside in. The living
room opens out in all directions to the gardens and has large
day beds and antique bookcases. This home is adorned with
treasured pieces of art, murals and sculptures that the homeowners
have collected from Sri Lanka as well as overseas. Chose where
you wish to dine: indoors in the breakfast room, by the poolside
or on a terrace upstairs. The cook will produce Western and
Sri lankan dishes to order, using local produce. The garden
is vast, bordered with a coconut estate at one end and a secluded
beach below. Set on a side of the garden is a dramatic 18-metre
infinity pool. Amapola’s friendly household staff includes
a cook/housekeeper, maid, gardener, and watchman who together
with the three dogs – Labradors and Rhodesian Ridgebacks
-- ensure security. The dogs are friendly and gentle and very
much a part of this household.
Excursions:
Amapola serves as an excellent base for exploring
the fine beaches and tranquil rural countryside of the south.
Weligama, Unawatuna and Mirissa beaches offer a perfect environment
for swimming and snorkelling along the coral reefs. Amapola
is also located just 20 minutes away from the historic Galle
Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site and a melting
pot of cultural influences. Several hours can be spent wandering
along its narrow streets and ramparts.
